Why is he mad at me?

I was in an on-and-off situationship for about five years with a guy who never took me seriously, even though I was terribly in love with him. After that ended, I had a formal relationship for about a year. Post-breakup, I saw my ex-situationship again. He was dating a girl 13 years younger than him and wasn't serious about her either. They broke up shortly after we reconnected. We started talking again and were supposed to be dating, but he made no effort—he wouldn’t text or call consistently, and he prioritized seeing his friends over spending time with me, often bringing me along instead of having time to connect one-on-one. When I confronted him, he said he was too busy working to be in touch all the time (I only saw him once or twice a week). After I called him out on his behavior, he disappeared for four days. During that time, I got back with my ex-boyfriend. When he reappeared after 12 days after not contacting me in any way, he tried to gaslight me by saying I had disappeared. Now, my ex-situationship has muted me, even though he was the one not showing up when we were supposed to be dating.

Why is he mad at me? What was I supposed to do? The worst part is, I still care about him, but I can't handle this no-relationship relationship any longer. I'm not the same girl he met seven years ago; I've grown, and I need someone with some level of commitment.
