Can someone say I love you by accident?

My boyfriend was joking around with me and I told him I thought he hated me as a joke. We’ve only been dating 5 months but then he blurted out no I love you. But then proceeded to say he didn’t mean it and that he only feels that in a friend way towards me. Does this mean he really meant it and blurted it out by accident? Or can he not get there with me one day?
