Is it normal for a man to give a woman a friendship ring? Is it really a platonic gesture?

We have known each other for 6 months, and we are very close. We talk about everything together.
He got me an early Christmas present; It was a ring. When he gave it to me he told me it’s a friendship ring because I am his best friend and he wants me to be in his life forever.

I thought it was really cute but also a little odd because I have had many guy friends but none of them has bought me a ring before. One of my guy friends bought me a heart necklace for my birthday and then ended up confessing his feelings for me a month later.

Am I just overthinking things?

I would say that this is a little strange. I have never heard that a person would give a friendship ring to someone that he/she only considers platonically. I believe that there is more behind that gesture than simply wanting to keep you as a platonic friend for life.

Unless of course this person is substantially more aged than you are and that he sees you as a friend and nothing but a friend but anyone else, in the same age group as you or 10-20 years older, then I have my doubts that his intentions are as pure as he suggests they are.

Just be careful and don't let yourself into something you don't want just because of that ring.

I could be wrong, by I don't think it's a platonic gesture. I think this is especially true the younger you are. Guys that aren't very experienced with relationships often try to ease in, thinking they can avoid rejection if they start slow, (this is often not true). People who are friends don't usually give each other symbolic jewelery.
