Why has this guy started ignoring me?

I’ve seen this random guy around a few times. When we’ve come into each others path, we’ve looked at each other and held the eye contact for a few seconds. He is always the first one to smile and I’m always the first one to look away.

I finally decided to take the next step and I said hello to him. We were walking towards each other and he smiled and stared at me. I said hello and his smile went even bigger and he looked down at the same time.

Since then, I think we smiled at each other once and we glance at each other from across the canteen.

However, I’ve found that when we’re in close proximity, he will look away from me and avoid eye contact. I’ve tried to say hi again but he will literally look away or straight ahead.

Why is he being like this after I’ve spoken to him?

Well it is hard to say why he is doing that. Only he knows but it is my guess that he is nervous when you talk to him. Sounds like he wants to talk by sending the signals he sends but then whe push comes to shove he gets cold feet and looks away. There really isn't much you can do at this point because it is evident that he is shy or nervous and only he is capable of getting over that. You have made contact and said hello but it is now up to him to take the next step and respond. Only he has the power to change the situation. Honestly it doesn't sound like he is going to woke up the courage to do it from your context.

He’s too shy to initiate conversation and you saying hi to him just made him even shyer cause now he’s expected to say something next time he sees you but he’s really shy and he can’t work up the courage to do it

Probably loosing interest if you want him talk to him or expect there are other women in his life

It's giving self conscious vibes. Like he doesn't know what to say AF. You will probably be the one to approach but remain very gentle in your approach to let him know you are a safe person.

Only he can answer this. He might be nervous or shy, especially if he's interested in you. Initial eye contact and a smile could be his way of expressing interest, but direct interaction might make him anxious.
