How do I know if my male friend likes me without asking him directly?

My male friend (M31) and I (F29) have been good friends for over two months. We usually don't hang out much except when working together on a project, but we went for a walk and had lunch together a few times. We shared similar interests, so we enjoyed talking with each other. A couple of weeks ago, we started talking about a holiday plan. He asked if I would like to go on a day trip with him on Christmas Day (we both don't celebrate Christmas), but the trains don't run on that day, so we decided to hang out in town. When I said I would be going on a one-week vacation trip after that, he told me he could join me (we are both single and have never dated someone before).

The thing is, I really like him (more than just a friend), but he never shows any sign that he is interested in me (at least that is what I believe), and I'm not sure what he was thinking when he said he wanted to travel with me - i. e. does he only wants to spend some fun time with a good friend or is there something else going on?

Do guys typically go on a trip alone with a female friend? Any suggestions on how to find out what he is thinking without asking him directly?

I mean I've done a lot of stuff with a female friend that, for those on the outside looking in, would be considered "date worthy" stuff just as friends. Granted, I've since stepped back from doing those sort of things with her (mainly since she turned me down for someone else, but also out of respect for the fact that if I were in a relationship, I wouldn't like it too much if my s/o did those kinds of things with someone else... especially someone she knows has those feelings for her who she says she doesn't.)

If think if he starts going more out of his way to do things for you or with you, that would be a sign he's interested but just testing the waters because he's unsure about how you feel. If he starts doing bigger things (watching a pet while you're out of town), pays for more meals or more expensive ones, offers to help out with bills, etc, that would be the time you guys might want to sit down and talk about what your expectations are... whether you guys are looking to be more serious than just friends or if you're not ready for that level of commitment. The sooner, the better because there will come a time where, if you haven't, someone will get their feelings hurt.

Well if you go on the day trip with him pay attention to every word that he says because he'll tell you exactly what he feels I'm sure that he already has but you probably missed it

If a guy shy he'll talk to you about certain things that you have to be able to understand and pay attention what he's really saying by watching his eyes listening to the words but he will tell you exactly his intentions and what he likes that you also have to be a little bit quiet is really pay attention but I can feel your words and I hear your words and I would say that he likes you

And just be patient and let him move it his own pace that he feels comfortable but he watched the way he looks into your eyes he will tell you everything

And don't look at it as if he has to tell you anything look at it as two friends going out enjoying each other's company don't try to read anything into it and don't try to project yourself I mean I know that you would like to know a bunch of stuff but at the same time don't worry about it that just happened it's not a big deal if this is all meant to happen it will happen just enjoy the time in the moment

It is probably important to respect his boundaries and avoid making assumptions. If you're unsure about his intentions, it's better to err on the side of caution and maintain a platonic friendship.

I think you should make the first move. Inexperienced guys can be scared to cross boundaries and need to feel like it's ok with you to move forward. I remember when I was a young guy, I was making out with a girl for a while and eventually she got impatient and grabbed my hand and put it on her breast. It was her way of letting me know that it was ok to touch her. Things progress normally after that.

A little nudge (or even a big nudge if he's thick-headed) is a good way to move things along. And if he doesn't share the same feelings, that's ok. You'll know the answer and that will be a bummer, but your life will still go on.

@amanontheweb Thanks for the advice. The only thing backing me from making a move is that I don't want to ruin our friendship if it turns out that he doesn't feel the same. He is such a good friend that I'm just too afraid to lose.

He's going on a trip with you. He likes you, but may be too scared to initiate something because you work together or a number of other reasons. If it turns out that he actually doesn't feel the same (and I think it's unlikely) then you can still be cool with each other, it's no big deal. These things happen in life.
The worst thing you could do is wait and not act on it and then he meets someone else and you missed your window when you were on a potentially romantic trip together. All I'm saying is don't assume he's not interested just because he doesn't outwardly show interest. Some guys are just shy or not confident with women.

@aviatortom I think the problem is I don't know what he thinks.. but I am leaning toward more of a friend because, as I mentioned, he never shows any sign of interest in me, so I got confused when he said he wanted to go on a vacation trip with me. I mean, we usually don't even get a chance to hang out together much and then he suddenly wants to travel with me. The first time he mentioned this, I thought he was kidding, and the second time, I thought he was just being nice because I said I would probably go alone. I only realised he meant it when he told me that we needed to plan for our trip.
