Why strange guy starts saying "good morning" and then he stops?

Hi, there is this guy who I see pretty much every morning on my way to work. He started smiling, looking into my eyes and saying good morning. First time I was so surprised I probably did not say it back (I cannot remember), next time I tried to say it back and smile as well. The thing is I am very shy and even when I try to say it back, it comes out very quiet and probably without a warm smile ( I feel a bit overwhelmed and cannot control my reaction). There were couple more situations like this. He now stopped greeting me and ignores me completely. And it bothers me to be honest. It was nice to see friendly face every morning and I want to say "good morning" to him as well. I wonder if it is a good idea to approach him and explain that it is my shyness rather than me being rude or not caring at all? I really miss his "good morning" and smile. It brightened up my day. Shall I just say it to him?

Sure you can still say hi to him and see what kinda of reaction you get out of that. Perhaps that is what he is waiting for... you to initiate the conversation. He might have felt that it was one sided and maybe that he was bothering you. You have to remember that it is nearly impossible to see how we react to someone. It is just not something you think about in the moment. Your reaction to him saying good morning might not be what you thought it was and he might get the vibe that you were bothered. He might have also thought that because he was always the one to say it first. After a while he might have been expecting you to initiate it. These are just guesses and it could be something else all together.

i think I may have come across as rude, not bothering to respond to someone's friendliness and I feel bad. by the way this guy is super gorgeous!

I think you likely explained why in your story and you’re probably right about what you should do. I get that you think you’re shy , but don’t you think you should attempt to change … clearly it’s holding you back !!
