Why does a coworker who’s new tell me about his girl drama?

He says this girl and him keep breaking up but he loves her and she does shit to him that’s wrong. Then he said he met a new girl and she got him a Christmas gift but he didn’t give her one. Uhmm

My best guess is simply put he feels like he's stuck in a very overly dramatic love life, and I think he's trying to hear a girl's perspective on the situation without asking directly cause that can be embarrassing for men. That's just a theory though. It's possible he's just so stressed out it came out on its own and he didn't even mean to vent. It happens.

Well, how do you act when he talks about these things? Do you listen quietly? Give feedback and try not to be judgy with your opinions? Because all of those characteristics could make you easy to talk to. Maybe not for everyone but he’s one of those people. I think the only reason you don’t get it is because he’s a guy and you’ve probably got this stigma in your mind that men don’t talk to women about things like their dating lives. But they do! :)

Everyone is different and you’ve got to keep that in mind. Like personally I wouldn’t just vent to a coworker and openly share my life details, yet I’ll get those people from time to time who tell me all their things without me volunteering any of mine lol. I don’t think he’s wanting anything specific by telling you about his dating life, at least not based off the context, he just may not have people to chat with about all this. He may even be hoping you’ll give him some sort of advice or feedback, but obviously you don’t have to engage in all that.

And that’s fair! Maybe you can set boundaries with him in a way that makes you feel comfortable. I’m not big on confrontation either so I’d understand if you’re reluctant to speak up, but that might be the best way for him to recognize you’d rather not talk about his love life lol.
