Guys, why would he post on social media but not want to hang out?

I have a friend I've known for a long time and we've been distance cause life changes in all directions. I texted him the other day, he said he's not fun to be around and he's going through shit. I understand that but he's still posting on social media. I dont wanna sound weird but why is he doing that but doesn't wanna hang out or talk. If things are that bad then why post on social media?
