How should I go about this?

There's this guy at my school that I like but I don't know how to go about it. We follow each other on instagram and he likes most of my posts. He followed me first, unfollowed me, then followed me back. I have messaged him a few times before. The first time he was kind of defensive. The second he was kind and answered my question. Since this past Friday he's been looking at me a lot and acts slightly different. I haven't seen too much since we don't have any classes together but I don't know how he feels about me and how to get him to make a move. I don't want to scare him away or upset him.
