Why is my male friends with benefits cockblocking me when he had his chance?

This guy I met through mutual friends had this unclearly defined friends with benefits relationship. We first started hooking up regularly but I always liked him. Later he left on a long trip then came back and I tried to set boundaries by telling him I liked him and couldn’t see him anymore because I can only be in serious relationships and I know he can’t give that. He claimed he liked me too but I didn’t really believe him. Still, he was very persistent and I fell into the trap of seeing him again and things between us didn’t change, we were still just f*ck buddies.

Fast forward to now - We haven’t been talking since he went on another trip but recently came back. He came to a party that I went to with our mutual friends. I’ve always had a crush on one of the guys at the party but he started being really good friends with my friends with benefits. When my crush came to me and started talking to me one on one, my friends with benefits suddenly appeared and came into the conversation and I took this as cockblocking (my friends confirmed, also from what I’ve been told my friends with benefits once made a weird face when I was talking to my crush at a different party and probably picked up on the fact that I was crushing on our friend). I don't know why he did this? Can someone explain this behavior lol.
