Why do boys incite jealousy to show they don’t care?

I've felt like this was a guys calling card in the past when it's been done. Not necessarily like he's trying to push me away but possibly see if I care or not. Sort of like how when we are kids we are the meanest to whoever our crush is, except as adults thats called abuse, but same idea in a way. Anytime I ignored this and didn't respond, I could see the guy disengage but if I react then that's like the greenlight and we are good to go. I personally won't even flinch if I notice a man doing this to me, I'll do it back though. If I get no response then I give no response. So careful with this tactic.
