So there's this guy I really like and am attracted to who works at a gas station and for the last few months I only go inside the store here and there but every time I do when he sees me his face lights up right away and he’s all big smiles and shiny eyes and he will pretty much smile the whole time while I pay for gas then he always says “ have a good day” still smiling all big and staring into my eyes… but I don't know today when I went in he was smiling big when he saw me ( I made an effort to look better then usual today for him ) and then he stopped smiling while he was counting the money maybe because I had stopped smiling for a bit? I think he could’ve been mirroring me but I’m not sure. Then we both smiled again when he handed me the change and I could just tell he was feeling awkward and I don't know if that’s a good thing or not… plus for ONCE today it was just me and him in the store and he didn’t even ask me out or strike up a convo… I was really disappointed and sad. And after he handed me the change I took longer then usual like a few seconds to put my money and stuff in my purse which I usually never do there and instead of asking me stuff he walked a few inches away cuz I guess he was feeling awkward but he still kept staring at me and facing me until I looked up at him and he looked away and smiled and said “have a nice day” I smiled and said u too and left… why did he look away? He usually smiles and stares until I leave… could he just have been being nice this whole time or is he just shy? Maybe was shyer then usual today cuz I looked better then usual? Should I ask him out first next time? I really do like him a lot and I’m sooo confused I was 100% sure he liked me before now idk… the way he smiles and me and lights up I can see it in his eyes when he stares I’m pretty sure he does like me … please help! Plus my friend said he never smiles at him that way!

I think I can help you out here. First, I don't doubt that you're right about him liking you. I do not think there is any reason to think that has changed.

He's a shy guy, and that explains all of his behavior. All of it.

The not smiling temporarily while counting change? Irrelevant. It means nothing. The smiling before and after is all that matters there.

Why didn't he ask you out because for ONCE you two were alone? Why did he seem to actually get MORE awkward and uncomfortable? Because he's a shy guy. He is not the smooth super-confident guy you seem to be assuming he must be. It's no mystery why he didn't ask you out. It doen't mean that he doesn't want to.

You tought "great, we're alone, I hope he asks me out"

He thought "Oh, shit... we're alone. What do I talk about? I hope I don't have anything in my teeth. Fuck. I'm being weird. Why can't I stop being weird"

And then he was so conscious of feeling weird, and fucking up (at least) a chance to chat with you. So he doesn't even look at you when saying goodbye. He is embarrassed at his own shyness in that particular encounter, BECAUSE you were alone. He knows he missed an opportunity.

Was it because you were looking extra good that day? No. But your thinking it might be... made me chuckle. (no offence. It's just never going to be that. For anyone)

If you really like this guy, then yes, I think you should ask him out first. I think that if you don't, you are likely to end up confused and frustrated (like this).
