Why does my situationship keep messing with "i love you"?

I'm in a situationship that started five months ago. A while ago he started saying "I love you" followed by a pause to freak me out followed by stuff like "is what I'd say to my mum if blablabla". I asked him to stop because it messes with me. Today he did it again. He said "I love you, goodnight." I said "what?" and he said "Shut up I'm talking to my dog. Just kidding, goodnight. Te quiero!" (I love you but in Spanish it doesn't suggest romantic love). A while ago he told me he was scared I might like him more than he likes me so I asked him if he was scared of me saying that I love him. He said "Nah, I trust you". I have no idea what his behavior suggest or what that trust is put in? Help? He keeps saying he's not ready for something serious by the way but we're exclusive I don't know shit is confusing as fuck
