I’m so sorry, Kitty. I know you had said he was starting to struggle a few months back. I’m glad you at least got one last summer to enjoy each other. Just know that you gave him as long and happy of a life as possible, and that he probably thought you hung the moon and the stars in the sky. I lost my cat of 19 years back in 2019. It’s tough, for sure, but it does get better with time, while you still never forget them🙏

I hope it’s done justice in writing and this can be told well without hearing and seeing me, but I’m going to tell you a story one of my hockey buddies, Doug, told us a couple months ago that had me rolling.

So when Doug was growing up, he was in the school band, played saxophone. In high school, he was also in some kind of special band, like a jazz orchestra or something like that. His school ended up getting into some big national thing down in Florida. Not sure if it was a competitive thing or some kind of special showcase, but it was apparently kind of a big deal.

They had to fly down there from Massachusetts. Apparently there are multiple kinds of saxophone, one of which is a “baritone” (aka “bari”) sax. The baritone saxophonist in the band had an intense fear of flying. This was probably a couple years after 9/11, so I don’t know if it was that or just standard fear of flying, but either way, kid says “No way, no how. I’m out.”

So the band director is scrambling now, there’s no one else to play bari sax. So I guess he approached Doug, and asked if there was any way he could learn to play the baritone part instead of his standard “alto” sax. Doug was nervous about it, but he had a couple months to practice, so he said ok.

Doug spent the next couple months practicing his ass off, trying to make the switch, learn the new nuances, learn all his new parts to the songs. And one song, he had a majorly important solo part. I don’t think it was long, but something key to the song that you had to get right, it wouldn’t be lost amongst the rest of the noise.

Day in, day out. Everyday after school, practice, practice, practice. Unlearn the old stuff, memorize the new stuff, and figure out how to make it sound like he’d been doing it all along. He just poured everything he had into it. He’s a super nice kid, and he went on to the Coast Guard, and is now a Captain with Boston Fire…. He’s pretty straight laced, and I think he has a strong “sense of duty”, so I think nailing this fill-in job was majorly important to him, so he put a lot of pressure on himself.

Fast forward a couple months to the day of the recital. They’re up there doing their thing, all is well. I guess they all sat in chairs up on the stage. The chairs were described to me as old, probably from like the 50s. Heavy fiberglass, and the seat of the chair was deep and back-set, and a little high in the front under your knees. Like you had to kind of rocket yourself up out of it with force, the way your weight was set in it. Like this kind, but it sounded deeper than this in the seat…

So Doug is set up in one of these chairs. He’s wearing his sax with a shoulder strap, which has a little carabiner that snaps into a metal loop at the bottom of the sax, and another further up to secure the top end. They set up a standing microphone in front of his chair for his big solo, when he was to stand up by himself.

The song is going, and he’s starting to feel the nerves, but he’s ready for his big moment. Months and months of practice to prepare. He’s got it down. It gets closer, and closer, and finally…. its time.

Doug stands up. Or he tries to. He awkwardly forces himself up…. but the bottom carabiner catches on the front end of the chair. This pulls the sax down and out of his mouth. It also causes Doug to lurch forward. It sends his face right up to the microphone, since it’s set low for the sax, not him at full height, just as he organically blurts out “Oh, FUCK!”, right into the mic and over the loudspeaker🤣🤣🤣

The crowd seemed taken aback, but the moment passes, and he just has to sit back down as the band plays on. He said he felt his face go red, and he was just trying not to cry the rest of the time, lmfao. He did say that his girlfriend who was also in the band felt so bad for him that she let him get to second base for the first time, so I guess his day got better, lmao…

…but oh man, that must’ve been MORTIFYING. And I would pay top dollar to see a video of it😂

When i was young, my family had a great dane, Aries. He was my best friend. I cried myself today, remembering him. He was a gentle giant most of the time, but fiercely loyal and protective. He literally put himself between me and my mother when she wanted to beat me. Then growled at her when she tried to reach over him for me. My ride or die homie! Best friend i ever had.

When i was a kid, i hated peanut butter and jelly sandwiches. I found out later in life that the reason for that was when my older sisters had to babysit me, they would put just enough peanut butter and jelly on the bread to hold as much salt and pepper as they could get to stick. Of course i didn’t know that. So i just didn’t like PB&J. If my mother made it, i always asked if i could eat it outside, and she almost always agreed. This made it easier to give Aries my yucky sandwich. He loved them! Big dog with slobbery jowls would (lightly) chomp down on my whole hand and slide the sammich out of my hand. 🤣🤣🤣
It was kinda gross. I always had to wash my hands after eating, or not eating. Ell oh ell! I came out way ahead in that partnership. He loved and protected me unconditionally and i gave him sandwiches.

I’m sorry you had to say goodbye to your dog.

I'm so sorry.
I suggest you don't put off feeling it. It will make it worse. Print out some pictures and put them in different rooms for comfort. Then cry it out when you need to.
My girl past at 19 1/2 in July. I had a lot of work to deal with and used it to distract. I now am stuck in numb. That emotion is going to blow at some point.
It hurts that much because we loved them that much.

Sorry to hear, of your loss. sad losing a pet and that's one of the hardest things to do to say goodbye and making such decision. They were lucky to have you. So many other pets, waiting for a home.
