Do guys like compliments?

Question

I always tell my boyfriend he's handsome or cute whenever I see him because I think that he is. Sometimes I tell him how I like his outfit. I also tell him he's smart, funny, or hardworking. He gives me compliments too, but it's hard for me to gauge whether he likes them or not.

You have to understand that only the top 5% of men, as ranked by attractiveness, ever gets a personal compliment. Sure, men get compliments on their work once in a while, but I'm talking about something personal - his looks, his morals & values, his skills in something outside of his job, etc. And when I say the top 5%, the bottom of that top 5% gets a personal compliment OCCASIONALLY, and it increases as you go up from there, with the top 1% getting as many personal compliments as the average woman (which is a WHOLE LOT compared to the vast majority of men). For these guys, a compliment is nice, and appreciated, but it's not a HUGE deal.

The average man can probably remember every personal compliment he's ever received - not that it's hard, because it's probably less than 5 total in his entire adulthood, and plenty of men have NEVER received a personal compliment. If some woman ever complimented his jacket or his shoes, he's still got that jacket or shoes and he'll never part with them.

But this means that most men don't know how to handle receiving a personal compliment. It's so rare that it's like a computer that locks up - the software crashes and he just stands there with a blank look on his face because he doesn't know how to process it.

Of course most men love compliments, but it's like being handed a 5-gallon jug of water after surviving for months on a teaspoon of water per day - it's overwhelming.

I like being thanked.

I really appreciate certain compliments from my lady about my looks, personality, knowledge, musical and vocal ability, work ethic, handiness, how I make her feel, and stuff like that.

But I don't like being complimented in a way that sounds like she is surprised that I can do normal things. That stems from my childhood.

When my dad would say in an unsurprised tone of voice "That was really good", I was proud.
But I remember my grandmother gushing over me catching a fly ball in my first year of park league and my reaction was disdain and thinking "What did you expect?"
There were other examples of my mom or grandmother being impressed when I did things. I guess it was the way they did it. Like they were surprised or thought I was cute.
I wanted to be treated like a man.
A man will simply nod or clap you on the back and say "Good work." It doesn't give the impression that he is surprised.
I feel good if a woman compliments me in the same way. But I don't like it if they act surprised.
I don't know it that makes sense.

Some guys just don't know what to do with the compliment once you give it to them. It's like when you tell a woman "Nice shoes" and she starts telling you it's old and where she got it and the whole f-ing journey of the f-ing shoe as if you gave a flying f and weren't just trying to find something kind to say. (SIGH.)

Guys will get a compliment and look confused or just say "ok..." and then not know where to go from there. I told a guy once that I liked the salt-and-pepper in his beard more than the stupid fake dye he was putting to look younger. He started telling me his cousin went prematurely grey and the journey he took to the hair dye... (Sigh). I just sat quietly and watched him till he stopped and realized I was biting my inner cheek trying not to laugh at him. So then all he could say was "ok... anyway" and go back to staring at his computer.

Since then he's let his beard go almost fully grey and it looks really nice in my opinion. But I'll just look and smile at him since I know he won't know what to do with the compliment.

So what does he need to do to show you that he likes it? Being overly gracious? Don’t get me wrong, anyone can appreciate a compliment. But when you’re “always” doing it, then you should expect the same overjoyed, gushing response each time. It could also come off as you fishing for a compliment in return (aka regularly seeking validation) when you’re doing it so frequently.

It depends whether the guy believes you're being genuine or not. Guys know that women generally do not compliment us unless she has a ulterior motives for doing so. So it's not that guys don't like compliments but generally you'regoing to get the side eye from him until he figures out WHY you're doing it. Also, to a lesser extent it depends how many compliments he's used to getting. Some never recieve any. So, the morehouse give him, and the more he determines as genuine. The more likely he'll be receptive ti them. Unless you just decided to date an a**hole. And given the liklihood of most women on G@G the odds are probably pretty high that is likely.😆 so every bit of advice I just gave you might be void if that's the case.😆

Yes we do like compliments but sometimes it can be hard to get them because we don't really know what to do with them partly because we rarely ever get them to begin with.
