Why would he say one thing and then later change up?

Why does a guy tell me he doesn't let people stay the night at his place even if they are dating, it has to be after some time. Which I understand, and he told me all this after he had let me stay the night one night and we had hung out again a couple days later. Anyways a couple days ago he invited me over and he said I could stay the night, he had some drinks prior and I did stay the night, even stayed almost the whole morning, to which he was sobered up and he didn't complain or anything about me being there (never has either).

But I guess what I'm asking is that is there a reason for the behavior cause when he told me about the whole not staying the night, he kind of turned down the preposition of hanging out so before this time it had been 3 weeks. So I was confused he said I could. versus just hang out for a little then leave, you know?

It seems silly to think about but I just have some time and figured I'd ask because in the past I've had a guy say I could stay the night and I have had to leave anywhere from like midnight to 2-3 in in the morning and I wouldn't even have been there for very long prior.

I could just be used and could just be a "filler" but he knows, I think, how I feel about him and I care about him but who truly knows. So some insight would be nice.
