Why would a guy switch up what he says?

I told this guy i liked him and i said i hope that him and i could continue being friends and he says “totally happy to stay friends😀”

but yet the whole sentence itself sounds sarcastic and i later found out he told my best friend that he never saw me as his friend and just someone who was “chill.”

but yet he talked about inviting me to his friend group before, and always talked to me asking about my relationships, and giving deep stares. He even gave me a nickname and always showed himself caring when something happens. His friends would continuously bring me up or make fun of him because he would snapchat me the most out of everybody.

What does this mean? why is he lying and switching up?

I’d say he probably likes you back but is hiding his true feelings. Throwing you mixed signals because he doesn’t want you to find out. The deep stares, the care, and the extra attention on you, are all signs of interest in my book. But he’s saying stuff to your friend and saying other things in attempt to cover his tracks.

if he likes me why would he reject me?

Sometimes it can be a timing thing. Or there could be other things going on. Just because 2 people like each other, doesn’t mean they should automatically start dating. Sometimes things get complicated.
