guess I need to elaborate. Have known this man for 3 years, we have talked periodically throught the years. It just threw me off because last time we talked he said "thanks for calling"

But in what context? You won't get any reasonable explanation, because the description of the situation is too poor to judge. It depends, on how he said that. What was his voice, what do you know about his life, and more importantly - why are you having this question? Is it because you feel there is an important message it carries? Maybe he feels alone during some important situation going on in his life and he was glad you made him a call, etc. Or maybe he says that just to be nice, nothing special.
