If a guy friend asks to go shopping with you?

So we were hanging out one on one (rarely happens unfortunately) and I was complaining about having to go shopping later (I HATE shopping.) My guy friend then asked if he can come with me. Since I was shopping for evening gowns (there is a gala at our university) it kinda surprised me.

I asked if he was serious, he said yes. Then I mentioned my girl friends were taking me and he backed out at that point.

What do you guys think? Do guys usually offer to go shopping with a girl friend or is he interested? I thought guys hated shopping too...

Could go either way. I've been shopping with a girl friend just as friends. Doesn't have to be any romantic attraction there at all. Maybe he was interested and he thought this would allow you to spend more one on one time together. But then once he found out your girl friends were coming with you he knew he wouldn't be able to hang out one on one anymore so he just left it. But it is also normal (well it's normal for me) for a guy to want to go shopping with a girl just as friends.

I might ask her along if I was shopping and wanted a females input, but what he did is weird.

So you never offered to go help a girl pick out an outfit for herself? Would there be any time where you /would/ offer?

The only way I'd help her shop is if we were going to find something that might look good on me, and while we are there we also look at clothes for her. But I would never volunteer to help her shop, that's not something a guy who is looking to date would do. It's boring! And I would feel more like the gay friend.

He wanted time alone with you, hopefully to see what you look like in a million dresses, Shahrazad. It's a clear turn-on for some guys. You've probably seen it in a movie or two, when the guy's crushing on a girl, she's struggling to find "the dress" and her best guy bud volunteers to take her shopping.

He doesn't want to be the **** in the henhouse, so when you said your friends were taking you he backed out.

I thought I did but he gives mixed signals, blowing hot and cold. I'm trying to figure out if he's just a friend that I think wants me because I like him, or if he is actually interested.

Yes, well people (guys/girls) give mixed signals about a thing if they're feeling nervous or uncertain about it.

Interestingly, someone told me that he only thought of going out with a particular girl because he knew she liked him, though he couldn't make up his mind about whether or not he actually liked her for herself. Sometimes it's helpful to take a step back to look at the big picture. Step back and see if he is still interested.
