What does it mean when a guy asks if you like anyone?

He just randomly asked me during a conversation (on instant messenger) if I liked anyone.

I do, him, but I couldn't just tell him that (maybe I should've but I'm a chicken) so said I sort of did and I think he got the impression I wasn't going to spill so he didn't press further.

But my question is, what does it mean that he asked? Was he trying to find out if I like him or just curiosity?

If I ask a guy if he likes anyone, it's usually because I just like having the info about everything that's going on around me. I'm not so sure why guys ask it, but it might just be because he wants to know things. Sorry if I bursted your bubble.
