Why is obesity being accepted as okay? Let alone beautiful

So, lately I've seen a lot of skinny shaming shit online. Personally, I think it makes no sense to attempt to shame perfectly healthy people. Yes there are girls that are skinny because of eating disorders and unhealthy habits, but a lot of us are naturally skinny or actually work for our figure.

It seems to me that a lot of fat and obese women are hiding behind "curvy" to make them feel better about their size. But I see no problem with making it publicly known that being fat IS unhealthy and shouldn't be promoted as a good thing.

If you don't live in England I guess you don't have a problem with this but as a tax payer I certainly do.

I think it's just plain selfish to allow yourself to get into such a state and I see no reason why I should just accept this as the way it is.

Everybody knows that being overweight is unhealthy. I don't support shaming of any kind. And I don't support the bashing of one size to uplift another. You don't have to accept anything. No one is forcing you to. Do I think people should be able to love themselves at any size? Yes. Overweight and obese people are well aware of their size and the fact that they are unhealthy. Do you think people like having that thrown in their face day in and day out? Let me tell you, it gets old real quick.

This whole movement started as a self love thing which I find nothing wrong with. Everybody should be able to feel beautiful. And not every overweight person you see is lazy! I've lost 42 pounds and plan on losing 30 more, yet just looking at me, I'm still overweight. So what? I'm automatically thrown into the lazy, over eater category? I think that's bull. People need to quit being so judgmental. Idc if I get down to a size zero, I will never tell someone that they aren't allowed to love themselves because they are overweight. To me that is what the point of body acceptance is.

Overweight and obese people are being treated like they're the worst people on earth. It's sad. I remember when I was first starting out with trying to lose weight. I came across a fat bashing page on Instagram that completely shattered my progress. Shit like that is not helpful to anyone.

Thank you... I feel the exact same way. People think that I'm overweight because all I do is stuff my face with food. I never over ate. I have a thyroid condition which makes me overweight, which I cannot control. Now that I have the proper medication, it has been easier to drop the weight. I was 200 when I started. Now I'm 170. My goal is 140, and I'm almost there. :)

I'm a chubby/fat girl. And you seem to have some seriously misguided anger and a rather callous attitude toward people in general. You can disapprove of my fat ass, thats fine. But I pity you so much. You sound so hateful. Why would you have a problem with a different interpretation of beautiful? You are really bothered by a movement for people to not feel like shit about themselves and not feel invisible? Um, yeah. I think you should go talk to someone or something. And if we are going to be shallow, I will say that I know plenty of fat girls who are more beautiful than a lot of thin girls, in my own opinion, by a certain standard. Being thin is not automatically beautiful, in my opinion.

Being skinny is definitely not automatically healthy either. And its not purely a matter of laziness. Most skinny people I know who are in my age bracket eat like monsters and couldn't care less about exercising. It would take ten times more effort for me to be their size, while it is an effortless state for them.

You're also referencing extremes. "Fat" can cover a lot of bodies. I'm fat, and I don't have any mobility issues. So that was a very random thing to add in your take, especially considering lots of people need mobility assistance, due to many conditions aside from extreme obesity.

I gained most of my weight as a child. Most children I know don't understand nutrition or health, and lack any serious discipline to lose weight. Not only that but I was somewhat depressed, which ruined any motivation to do much of anything. And in addition to that, my body chemistry includes insulin resistance, the symptoms of which include weight gain, difficulty losing weight, and increased hunger all at once. These are not rare conditions at all. I'm not saying I'm perfect, but how the hell did I "allow myself to get into such a state"? And my diet is actually healthier than those of many thin people. I simply have to work even harder to lose weight, which is why I always reach a stopping point around 25 pounds lost. You have to restrict beyond just eating healthy, or exercise regularly, which I struggle with.

Education is a lovely thing, my dear...

And at the end of the day - not your body, not your problem, and damn sure not your position to comment on what my body should look like.

You're not though. A very small percentage of fat people have mobility issues that cost anyone anything. Like I said, there's a huge range of bodies that are considered fat before you get to the point of not being able to move. And like I also said, lots of people need mobility assistance, not just a small population of extremely obese people. You're going to have a lot more people with other conditions who also need assistance.

Spot on!!! I consider myself curvy because I actually HAVE curves, im not just a blob who calls herself curvy because I get it confused with round. I work at a plus size clothing store, like many women, I'm my size because I have a medical problem. My sister is a size two, I'm a 14. Yet I can jog a mile and not be tired yet she can't even do half of a mile. Even at my size, I take care of myself by healthy eating habits and regular physical activity. But some people I see, they don't do anything to better themselves. And I know that being obese can be related to a psychological or emotional distress or disturbance. But I feel that all too often it comes down to ignorance and laziness. Say you have two people, the first person eats like crap but has a high metabolism, the second person eats the exact same way as the first person but has a poor functioning metabolism. One is thin the other is fat, yet even though they both eat the sabe only the visibly unhealthy person gets called out. I think that if we expect accountability on the visibly unhealthy people we need to do the same for those who don't appear unhealthy at first glance. Obesity is an epidemic. How is it that 3/5 of the world lives in POVERTY and STARVATION yet the other lives in a OBESE society? Why does 40% of all manufactured and produced food go to waste when we have 3/5 of the world starving? There is something wrong with our world. Skinny shaming, fat shaming. It's all the same. It's not nice and it's not right.

I completely agree with this statement. Yet, I think we need better education with regards to what we are putting into our bodies. Also, our bodies weren't meant to live a sedentary lifestyle. We were meant to move! Knowledge is power. However, for those who refuse to educate themselves even with resources, or who don't wish to change, I don't pity them. In fact, I'm disgusted. I get what you're saying, but the reality of it really is that people are way too concerned about other people's lives.

If you look at the statistics of how many people are fat, and compare that with people who can't leave their house.. There is a big difference.

The government also spend millions and millions on people who are underweight with eating disorders.

I work in a grocery store part time and these people seriously don't care. They'll make excuses instead of figuring out ways to be healthier and some even think they're "health experts." It's really pathetic.

I know my primary job is trying to do something and they've started screening people for health risks and people who have more health risks due to their lack of exercise and diet are gonna pay more for their insurance than healthier people. So I feel that's a step in the right direction. They even charge smokers more for insurance too as a way to encourage them to quit smoking.

It's the same problem in the US as well with them costing insurance companies a fortune. They cost insurance companies a fortune to keep them alive.

Another issue is this "fat acceptance" stuff. It's really a "fat promotion" movement. Meeting someone who is about the "Fat acceptance" movement will show you that it all starts out with the "It's ok to eat that junk food" and "people should accept you the way you are" which really translates to "Don't get in shape." People should be inspiring each other to get in shape for themselves. Instead with this fat promotion movement we got "Go ahead and eat that cheeseburger" instead of "make a better choice in your foods to live a healthier life."

The other big issue is that fat people get a lot of false praise. The issue is due to the sensitivity that has grown among people nowadays. Simply suggesting a person change their diet for the better gets mislabeled as "fat shaming" and does nothing but encourage their unhealthy eating habits. They'd rather just hear "you're beautiful the way you are" and let them go back to eating a ton of potato chips and ice cream.

I do agree with your viewpoint. We're moving from the fitness age to "all sizes are beautiful" as a way to accept obesity. If you speak up, they take it as an insult when really, you're just concerned about their health but often they dispute that being obese is damaging their health so it's like talking to a brick wall.
A lot of overweight people are in denial and to them, skinny people are tiny and they often jump to the conclusion they're anorexic or "too skinny" when they're actually a normal weight.
I had a training day with middle aged women, nearly all were overweight and I got glares a lot and then one day, the skinny old guy told me to eat more and get more meat on my bones! I felt like they'd been talking about me behind my back. I have more than enough meat on me so I was shocked and then thought that if I told an obese person to eat less, I would be shamed! Did no-one notice me eating fruit for lunch whilst they chose fattening options? I don't appreciate this double standard. People tend not to be skinny by pure luck.

Fat shaming has been around for sooooo long and now skinny shaming is coming around. Honestly is it healthy to be very overweight? No. Is it healthy to be super skinny? Who ever said it was okay? Just because they promote things in a way to help women love they way they look no matter what, doesn't mean they're condoning someone weighing 800 pounds. But, just because a person weighs more then average, doesn't mean they shouldn't feel good about themselves as a person. Some things are out of our control and for some people losing weigh isn't easy, so we have to love who we are and how we look, even if other people don't.

Also, I don't think it's right to shame or judge anyone for anything EVER! I've spent my whole life being judged for things and it sucks and it hurts. Especially, when people don't know anything about you. I don't know how we got in a world where a person can look at another person for 10 seconds or less and magically know everything about them. Guess what? Just because a person is overweight, doesn't mean they are lazy. Maybe, based on how they look, it may seem that way. But, you don't know it's that way. Just like you can't look at a skinny person and assume they never eat, because you can't know that either.

I'd like to add the fact that I am overweight purely by means outside of my control. I exercise daily (cardio and/or strength training), eat as healthily as I can on a limited budget (and no, fast food is NOT something I eat often or consider 'healthy'), watch my calories, control my portion sizes, and I work as a waitress, constantly running around for up to 12 hours in one day with hardly any time for sitting or lazing around. I'm still overweight. I just don't lose weight easily, no matter how hard I work. It is ludicrous to assume that all girls who aren't a size 0 are too lazy to change their lifestyle. Some of us are just unlucky. As such, I don't believe anyone has the right to shame skinny, or 'healthy' girls. Everybody is dealing with their own struggles that you may or may not know about and it is not your place to judge someone based on your visual perception of them.

I totally agree. Weight issues can stem from lots of factors and it's rarely ever all about being lazy and eating too much. Genetics, medical issues, medications and mental health all could play a role into why a person has weight issues. Nobody should be shaming anybody because there's no help in going about it that way.

Bullshit. I was 240 lbs now I'm 225. I'm working to lose weight and get to a healthy 200. I'm training my body for function, not form, but that doesn't mean that my body won't start to look better. And yes I have a genetic factor. Diabetes runs on both sides of the family, somehow by the grace of God I've avoided it. Most diabetics are typically overweight, especially type 2

I want a woman in my life that works to maintain a healthy figure. In return, I should live a healthy lifestyle as well. Personality is extremely important, as I always think "do I want to wake up next to her?" but without physical attraction, I don't see how it can work.

I can understand that you find this a nuisance but that doesn't mean someone has to not like themself. I highly doubt them hating themselves is going to make your taxes any lower. And I'm pretty sure most of them don't enjoy being big either.

The reason is because fat shaming has gotten a lot worse, and as a result people are striking against it with the fat acceptance movement. Until they stop targeting fat people the fat acceptance movement will continue. Although nobody should be getting shamed for it.

Today people can't get away with using things like race, gender, and sexual orientation to make themselves feel superior, as these things are not seen as a choice so it is seen as wrong to judge people for them. So now people have found new targets to discriminate against and are targeting things people are perceived as being able to help such as a persons weight or if they smoke or not. I even know people that laugh at people that get lung cancer now because of how much they hate smokers.

If you want to live in a free society then people have to be free to make bad choices for themselves. People should not be mocked or made to feel bad because of the choices they make in their personal lives. Meaning it really doesn't matter if they can help being fat or not. It is their body, and other people need to leave them alone.

Well, if it's anything like it is in the U. S., I think this acceptance is 'reactionary.' People became fat en mass (no pun intended), discovered that everyone is fat too, and, not knowing what else to do about it, simply decided to call each other beautiful - thus by extension calling themselves beautiful as well.

The question is really how did we become so fat? I don't think we are eating "more," at least not in a direct sense. I think our food has become harder to refuse. Sugar, salt, and grease. These are the basic components of almost all fast food in the U. S. And it is almost irresistible. If they knew the consequences, then sure, they'd probably resist. But it is impossible to stress the consequences of "just one meal."

It's like smoking: everyone knows it is unhealthy, but at the same time, everyone also knows that no individual cigarette will kill you. Similarly, so individual fast food meal will make you fat. So, at the time of deciding what to eat, people don't think much could be wrong with having fast food just this once. And the next time they have to eat, same logic. And the next time. And so on. It's a trap. Not an intentional trap - the only intention is to make money by providing food with minimal overhead and maximum appeal. Sugar, salt, and grease. Easy money. Does that make fat people victims of capitalism? Maybe. Who knows...

2. The money. We spend money on a lot of unnecessary things. And we waste other people's money on even more. People abuse the system. The number of kids that don't study while they're getting "free" education. The number of addicts that go through rehab just to go back to the addiction. The number of prisoners who go right back to committing crimes. Look at all the bailouts that were squandered, all the wars that solved nothing. Yes obesity costs us a lot but it's definetly not the only thing or even the biggest. Do we stop helping because some people don't appreciate it? Being mad at those that don't appreciate what they've been given doesn't do much but hurt you. Money is never really wasted anyways it's just moved from one hand to another.
3. Shame is never a good motivator. I'd rather teach people to love thier body no matter what it looks like then teach them to care for it. Seems like a better plan than attacking people for thier genetics and past decisions.

Obesity can easily be classified as a psychological disorder. Most people like to look healthy, including overweight people. Some people just let themselves become obese and don't do anything about it. It's both an eating and psychological disorder caused by emtional problems most of the times.

On the skinny shaming part: I have seen it happen online, never in real life. It's based on jealousy. I say this because I'm 17 and I weigh 81kg/178lbs. I'm not fat, I've done judo since age 8 and I'm pretty muscular but I have some belly fat. I get pissed when I think about all the work I do and still can't get a 6 pack and then some skinny fuck who never worked out has some 6 pack. I feel jealous about it but I never shame them or try to make them feel bad for it. Instead I have incresed my work rate and started a diet. Which is all those 120kg/265lbs fatties should do instead of trying to say it's ok to not fit through doors. Even worse is when fat girls say you're a douche for not banging them

Damn this article is very judgmental. I don`t know anything about England but in America I know a mother personally that is trying to lose weight but cannot due to the reality of not having enough time for herself to do so. She is not lazy at all.

She has to wake up at 6, leave house at 7 to drive at least an hour just to get to her job at 8:30 AM, then she works for at least 8 hours, drives back home for another hour, by that time it is already 5:30 or 5:40, come home to clean the house for another 2 hours, and cook dinner. By that time dinner does not get served until around 8 or 8:30 at night. Plus the driving distance to supermarkets that houses healthy foods where she lives is in such far distances that driving back and forth will take nearly 2 hours in total including the time to shop for her food. So to save time sometimes she has no choice but to turn to fast food places that is closer to her home. Plus the neighborhood where she lives is not that safe at night.

Also there are some families whose income just cannot allow them to buy healthy foods for an entire month, so some families have to buy unhealthy foods just because it is cheaper.

Also that last sentence of yours seems very uncaring from the way you worded it but whatever

It's easy to thing obese people are obese from overeating and then from a health problem but what about a mental problem?

Would you judge someone who had been raped for turning to alcohol? Drugs? No? Then why do you judge them for turning to food?

And if that was the case, why do you judge for them for realising the problem too late and needing help to get better?

Do you judge people for getting pregnant and struggling? Maybe they realised and got help. Maybe they killed their baby. Maybe they ate away their depression.

I'm not saying obesity is an excuse, but you are making it clear that you are obese because you can't help it or because of an illness. You excuse lack of weight for all of the above reasons but not overweight. Either all is okay or none is okay.

I understand underweight is generally less serious than overweight but your argument is very weighted. I'm purely trying to balance it.
