10 Skin Tips for Those with Oily, Acne-Prone Skin

As someone who has struggled with oily skin and acne, I thought I’d share some tips on how I learned to control mine. Although acne is often influenced by a genetic predisposition to the condition and hormones, a change in lifestyle can help a lot.

1.) Diet is honestly so important and I don’t think it’s emphasized enough. Avoid drinking sugary drinks and eating oily or sugary, processed foods. Eat more whole foods and vegetables. Veggies do amazing things for the skin.

It helps to think of acne like lactose intolerance; just like how those with lactose intolerance should not eat dairy products, those with acne should not eat unhealthy foods. It sucks at times but there’s a silver lining: the healthier you eat, the healthier you’ll look, feel, and be.

2.) Drink more water.

3.) Wash your face every morning and evening; avoid washing more than that. Over-washing your face will strip your skin of its natural oils, causing your skin to produce even more to compensate for the lack of oil.

4.) Put moisturizer on in the morning so that your skin will be less inclined to produce as much oil. Cetaphil is great.

5.) Use oil absorbing sheets throughout the day if you need to. I get them from Target.

6.) Avoid touching your face, especially when your hands aren’t clean. Also, avoid picking at or popping zits.

7.) Change your pillow cases and sheets often.

8.) Exercise! This helps with stress.

9.) If you have clogged pores, I definitely recommend seeing an aesthetician and getting microdermabrasion done. You can probably find a discount to a place on groupon. The procedure literally sucks the gunk out of your pores, leaving your skin soft and clean, and allowing topical creams to be more effective. It also helps diminish scarring.

If you’re interested in doing this, I highly recommend using a clay mask a few times a week beforehand. This helps raise the gunk.

10.) Ladies, avoid thick, creamy foundations that will further clog up your pores.
