6 Ways to Be Happy, Love Yourself, and Appreciate Life

We're all so caught up in life that sometimes we forget about our own happiness.

6 Ways to Be Happy, Love Yourself, and Appreciate Life

My mom's friend lives alone, she was diagnosed with depression. She spends all her paycheck on expensive branded clothing and she doesn't save up money for much else. My mom told me during her breaks, she is seen laughing to herself for no reason because of the medication that she takes.

During middle school, I had no friends because everyone had their own circle from their previous elementary schools. I sat through lunch alone and after school I went home and locked myself in my room and didn't talk to anyone for the whole day. My dad wanted me to get checked for depression, he was so sure that I was mentally ill. The psychologist told my dad that that it was worse that he was the one telling me 'something's wrong with me', they told me nothing was wrong with me. I wanted to change myself because I was scared, I tried to talk a bit more with the girls in my class, and soon middle school went by fast. After that I got occupied with ballet and school work and by the time I started high school, there were stressful days but there weren't many days were I was extremely sad like before. I've been called sensitive and my ex used to call me a crybaby, but I wanted to write this myTake anyway.

Without further ado, here are some things to remember to keep yourself happy. Whether you've had a fight with your friend, if you went through a recent break up, or if you've just had a bad day...

1. It's okay to make a mistake.

If everyone was perfect, then there would be no point in learning and striving for something. We all make mistakes; some people make more mistakes than others, but despite the put-downs or the harsh criticism you might get, it's a learning experience. It's okay to mess up sometimes, if it's unintentional.

2. If someone doesn't like you, that doesn't mean no one likes you.

It's true that there will always be that one person who decidedly might not like you, but that shouldn't matter because it's just that one person. There'll always be that one person who loves you and there's always someone for everyone. Or maybe a group of people. You're liked or even loved by your friends, partner, and family.

3. You're valued, so never underestimate your self-worth.

Everyone can make a contribution to this world. You are not worthless, you're talented and unique as a snowflake. Sure, you might doubt your capabilities or there may be people who doubt them, but in the end you are capable. You might not be capable of certain things but you are capable of other things other people aren't. (Ex: you're someone who makes other people happy, you're someone who is intelligent, you're someone who can see sides from all perspective, etc).

4. Never look at the past. Forgive and forget.

If someone hurts you, you don't necessarily need to hurt them back. Even if you got in a huge fight you will not be able to be truly happy, if you can't let the past go. You can learn from your mistakes and maybe it's not your fault at all, but you'll be in a more relaxed state of mind if you'd stop hating their guts.

5. Never look too deep in the future.

I mean of course you should look at the future if it's goal-orientated. However, don't think about it too much to the extent that you're stressed out or scared about it. If something is going happen, it will happen in time. Always accept the present and if you're worried about making the wrong choice for the future, it's okay because it's going to be learning experience.

6. Never expect anything. Appreciate what you have.

If you expect anything, you'll be disappointed if you don't get what you want. It's not always possible to get certain results or a certain item. Appreciate everything and everyone you have with you right now, or you'll regret it if that's taken away from you. Focus on all the great things you already have.
