What causes diarrhea?

Ever since coming back from Mexico on December the 13th, I've had diarrhea almost every single day. I'm not sure why because I only ad diarrhea one or two days while I was there so I don't think it's the food I ate. The only possibility I can think of is that the airplane food I ate wasn't clean but I'm not sure about that either. Is it the sleep deprivation from not getting enough sleep while flying home in the middle of the night? Is it drinking too much water? Is it me getting a mild case of the flu / cold from the colder weather here in Canada? The only questionable food I ate was a bowl of canned tomato soup that might have been 2-4 weeks old. Other than that - all the food I ate was clean.

What caused the diarrhea?

It's called Montezuma's Revenge, and yes it's from the stuff you ingested in Mex. Much of the water in Mex is contaminated. You need to drink bottled water, no ice, or try to make sure where you are uses filtered watered to make ice, and that's no guarantee. Then, anything fresh you eat, like fruits and veggies, we're they washed with tap water? Or filtered? Long story short, I don't want to share any unflattering details, but Mexico is one of my favorite travel destinations, I'm an off the beaten path kind of girl, and I have yet to come home without some degree of misery. If it doesn't clear up in a few weeks, see a doctor, you might need some Flagyl.

That's why you have to be careful what you eat and drink in other countries. In most countries, the water isn't really safe, so they advise you not to drink it. In that case, bringing your own would help.

You know water isn't really all that good in other poor countries
so it could be that also could be bad water you drank while on the plane
it could be mild case of food poisoning cause food on them planes aren't
all that safe to eat cause it's very unsanitary.

Could be the water or just a shock to your system. You may have picked up a stomach bug that is making you poop. Does it smell or are you gassy and bloated?

It doesn't smell. It did while I was on vacation - I got pooping urges from drinking sea water when I went scuba diving. (the scuba diving gear wasn't very good and kept leaking salt water into my mouth)

Water pressure also causes the urge to poop. How deep did you go? Could you find a toilet?

My head was less than 1 feet below the surface but I was swimming i about 8 - 12 feet of water if that makes a difference.

Well even in my back yard pool I find at least half the time I go swimming I need to poop.

Think of blankets... the more blankets that are on you, the heavier they are and you start to get squished. The deeper your body gets in water, the more the water presses on your body and squishes the poop out in a sense. But you weren't deep. Being at the surface of wAter 5 feet deep isn't any different than water 500 feet deep. You could have got a bug. After returning from the Dominican a few years ago I didn't poop solid for 6 months

Also if you drank a lot of alcohol you may have just more liquid to expel. So you piss out if your butt

your stomach is rejecting the contents of the food you ate. that or you could've used dirty dishes and utensils, meaning bacteria.
