There are chronic sources of lower lumbar (back) pain and then there are emergent (new or treatable) back pain.
Body composition has a lot to do with it. In men belly fat contributes, while in women, both belly fat and cup size do.
There are disease processes like scoliosis, kyphosis and disc degeneration that are not common by gender.
When it is examined by mechanical stress there is no gender specific etiology (cause). Maximum weight per individual ability, chronic movement syndrome (like carpal tunnel etiology) or technique in making those movements effective and safe, are not gender specific.
It's for these reasons that I did not vote in the poll. I think perhaps gender specific etiologies can be established but not a universal absolute.

Up in the air on this. Could probably be equal amounts of men and women. I'd say that most women get back pain for different reasons than men. Aside from periods/menstrual cycles, lower back pain can be fixed. A lot of things can cause back pain. If there's no permanent damage to the discs in your lower back though, the pain can be fixed, and fairly easily.

+1 yI know my boyfriend has back pain all the time, but mostly in his upper back due to his acute scoliosis. I also know that a lot of my friends complain of back pain due to the size of their busts.
I get lower back pain only when I go really hard at the gym with exercises that target my torso region (shoulders, core, lower back, upper back, etc.).
So... I don't know.
My dad works manual labor lifting heavy things every day - and by heavy I mean 500-1000 lb cow carcasses, none of this sissy boxes nonsense ;) - and he almost never complains of back pain of any kind.00 Reply
I hear it more often from women but I don't know who has more pain.

I think men will choose to take jobs that require them to lift heavy things and they are more likely to have back pain and problems from their job,
But women have to go through back pain every month, its not just our uterus that cramps up. Its like having poison in out lower abdomen and it slowly seeps through into our back and thighs.
And then there's the whole pregnancy thing, carrying a continuously growing person in your abdomen, which is also pressing on your spine the entire 9 months.
I think all women have more back pain than men for more of their lives, and men are just more likely to CHOOSE to do something that will give them back pain.10 Reply666 opinions shared on Health & Fitness topic. I've heard it more from women, not due to injury, but because of pms symptoms, my lower back always hurts around that time of the month. So does my mom's and cousin's. The men that I know don't really injure their lower backs, only the older men, but that goes for the older women too. Old farts always throwing their backs out lmao.
00 ReplyI think it could honestly be either or. I have bad back pain which i have had for a few years now. Though i honestly just think it comes down to heaps of factors from if u slouched growing up or what u have done in your life, plus many other factors. I don't think u could say its more in men or women.

+1 yNo clue but omg it's murder! I pulled my left lower back like last month and it's still aching some. ;( which the other day while working out I pulled the muscle connecting my neck and shoulder. XD but that one is almost healed up and that was just a couple of days ago.

+1 yMy guess would be women because of the instability period and pregnancy can cause. Women are also more prone to diseases that damage nerves and autoimmune disorders.
It might have been interesting if your poll was asking people who has back pain instead of who we think has more pain.00 Reply I'd have to see the research. I want to say girls because of breasts, but because of obesity rates in America all of us are more likely to experience back pain. Obesity plus having a lifestyle where we sit down for too long. More guys in the computer world, but secretaries are almost all women who sit all day long. *shrugs* I'm not sure

Anonymous(25-29)+1 yDepends. Women have menstration, which actually can cause a lot of back pains. That doesn't mean men can't get it either though. My family has a long and hard history with back stuffs and for us unfortunately it's worse amount the women. It could also depend on your occupation or how active you are.

Anonymous(25-29)+1 yEvery athlete has a pre-existing injury from playing that sport that eventually becomes aggravated I know I've got a bad knee and a bad shoulder from playing Lacrosse and I think any other athlete can describe something similar because guys are more athletic than girls I'd say that guys are more likely to have these injuries and therefore lower back pain.
00 ReplyProbably women.
1) They have large tits, which constantly applies a torque whenever they're standing.
2) They naturally have a more lordotic spine, which makes their butt more prominent and protuberant. This also contributes to lower back pain.10 ReplyHmmmmmm... I don't know... Lets flip a coin. Heads is men. Tails, women. *flips coin*... Tails!
There ya go definitive proof. Women have more back pain.

+1 yIn any person who mostly works sitting down or bending over a lot - like mechanics or cleaning ladies...
Also - women with bigger boobs - no matter the job they have.00 Reply 1.5K opinions shared on Health & Fitness topic. I say men have more lower back pain than women, mainly because men tend to be less flexible than women on average.
Probably because of the styles of exercise that are more stereotypical for each gender to do (ex. power-lifting vs pilates)00 Replyprobably women. larger breasts cause back pain if they're not supported well enough. and some women experience lower back pain while on their period.

+1 yI have no idea but I know I have bad back pain. I would assume women because they have boobs and a lot of women (at least in America) are overweight so they have huge ones which can cause back pain.
