What does it mean when a guy smiles at almost EVERYTHING you say?

I don't understand it.

Sometimes he smiles directly at me when I say something, but most of the time he just looks away and smiles in a different direction.

I meet one girl who just got her phd and was over seeing our lab, and they way she interacted with people reminded me of me, and was funny but intelligent, and I couldn't help but smile each time she said something truthful and funny but not something most people would typically say... too bad she was engaged.
