How do you feel about a personal trainer in worse shape than you?

You know those personal trainers that look like they could use your help, not the other way around.

Yeah, I had an overweight personal trainer once and I kind of took everything she said with a grain of salt. Especially when she started talking to me about diet lol. I mean, I feel bad, but I think it's just natural for people to want to get advice from someone who has the results that they want. I mean, my trainer was in excellent shape and I had no problem following her exercise advice, but I didn't listen to her when she was talking about diet. I'd rather listen to a professional when it comes to diet, and not a personal trainer who only knows the basics of nutrition.

I'd be skeptical.

I suppose it's possible that they areknowledgeable about nutrition and exercising but if they don't have a body that proves that they know how to apply that knowledge to get results, Id be hesitant to trust them.

Another job of a trainer is to keep you focused and motivated on your goal. I'm just not sure if I could take a fat dude seriously to motivate or inspire me.

I'd rather be coached by someone with real-life experience and results through trial-and-error than someone looking like shit with a fancy diploma or certificate. If he/she has both though, even better.

(I've been training with a personal trainer for over two years.)
I side heavily (pun not intended) toward a personal trainer looking like they're in shape themselves. HOWEVER, I wouldn't be totally against being trained by a personal trainer who looked in worse shape... but it depends. I say that because I don't know if that's something in their control.

Do they LOOK like they're in worse shape because of a health problem? Then, it's something that's out of their control and can't really help or solve at the moment. I'd be willing to be trained by such person.

BUT, if they're not in shape because they don't make an effort to work out and eat properly, then I wouldn't want to be trained by them, even if they have the skills as a trainer.

Not everybody can control what they look like. Some people are big boned or have bad metabolisms. As long as they aren't gross looking - I'd assume they are unlikely.

working out and eating right are ways to control your metabolism. I know not everyone can get to 6% body fat without being in the gym for hours a day or steroids but everyone can get to 10% bodyfat with some effort. https://i35.tinypic.com/1z1zeba.jpg 10%

If they can provide evidence that they were once in good shape, then I wouldn't care.

I probably wouldn't trust them. But if you think about it maybe they do know how to get you in good shape but are too lazy to themselves

As long as they are knowledgeable I'm fine with it, but I'd definitely push them also to lose some pounds.
