Why does he brag about himself?

So, my guy friend loves to brag about himself. Like, he tells me how many girls want him. Or how a hotty is sounding interested him in taking things furhter physically. So, when I encourage him for all these things, he suddenly stops bragging and says something like they are not his type, or he is not interested... Even I know that he is bragging because I am his close friend and knows how much he is close to other people, but why does he do that?

He's trying to get you to notice him. Honestly, this works with a lot of girls because so many of y'all are highly attracted to displays of strong self-esteem in guys.

But people with good self esteem doesn't need to brag.

I don't care, to be honest. In fact, I boost him up to go and get the hotty, but suddenly starts making excuses and says that he doesn't want her and just move on from that point.

His bragging is not getting me talk to him. We are good friends, that's why I talk to him. But he slips into this 'I am freaking awesome and all girls want me' mode once in a while.

Yeah but girls like to hear that a guy is successful with other girls, I mean if he said how he struck out all the time you wouldn't be asking the question here.

But don't we show our success rate to someone we want to date? I mean, I won't go around, showing how popular or in demand I am, to my guy friends.

You didn't say you wanted to date this dude or vice versa. If he said how he sucked with women and they didn't want him, would you still be interested/talking to him? I'm guessing not.

I will talk to him. Why not? Does it matter that someone rejected or dumped my friend (he has told me about it)? It seems more like he is trying to up his self-esteem.
