Trending & News I heard about it too. I've never been a fan of protein drinks because they gave me the trots and left me feeling not so well. And I used them only after working out. I wouldn't doubt the damage they do considering all the unknown crap in them. Seriously, ever read the ingredients in some of these? You're taking in for more than just protein.
i've never heard this specifically but i know that high amounts of vitamin A can damage the liver so i wouldn't necessarily be surprised if it's true.
but a lot of things damage the liver (sugar, some medicines, trans fats, etc). the good news is that the liver can heal itself
Total non-issue. In fact, most people who don't regularly eat fish can benefit from taking 50,000 to 80,000 IU of vitamin A a day.
In terms of the standard size softgels sold in drugstores, that's 8 to 12 softgels/day. Yep.
@redeyemindtricks well i'd think since that since most protein shakes contain about 1/4 of your daily Vitamin A supplement. taking mroe than the recommended dosage could damage the liver when you consider that you may get vitamin A in other sources. like i said i've never heard specifically that protein shakes damage the liver but for sure excessive or improper use of it could potentially cause problems... as with anything
The "recommended daily values" for most macro- and micronutrients are a farce.
For instance, US nutrition labels show a daily value of 50 grams of protein, which is less than you would get from literally eating nothing but bread and water.
And let's not even get into the carbohydrate recommendations, which are practically guaranteed to promote diabetes II in any adult who's not extremely active.
The OPTIMAL dose of vitamin A is about 1200 to 1600 percent of the US RDA. That's optimal for immune and anti-inflammatory functioning.
The RDA values are more along the lines of "you have a tropical disease below this level"... Not "optimal".
Whoever told you protein shakes threaten the liver is an alarmist idiot. Would you be worried about the possible damage from 1 sip of wine?
Good... because the effect on the liver is way, WAY less than that, even.
@redeyemindtricks could you cool the inflammatory talk? did i suggest a sip of wine would be the death of me? NO i didn't. the alarmist idiot that said excessive amounts of vitamin A could damage the liver was the World Health Organization
regardless we can stop talking since i don't talk to disrespectful (for no reason) people. so you can have a the win since i refuse to go back and forth on this with you. good day
Agreed. Vitamin A can cause liver damage if there is too much. Thinking it might be that or depending what brand you use and what artificial ingredients and sugars are in them.
@freespirited42 thanks. i definitely wasn't suggesting protein shakes will destroy your liver but apparently there is a fairly significant amount of vit a which the WHO and NIH both say can cause liver damage. so as with most things, in moderation there is probably not a big concern unless you are damaging your liver in other ways
Nope. Might give you the runs, but, that's it.
You'll only have issues if you try to construct most or all of yr diet from artificial foods. Then you might start having various issues from micro-nutrient depletion.
As long as you use supplements AS SUPPLEMENTS, you will be fine.
i haven't heard this but i would eat boiled chicken breast instead

They contain whey and too much of it doesn't seem to be good for liver and kidneys.

Moderate use won't hurt in my opinion.
I think it would only cause serious liver damage if you were drinking more than 6 scoops a day for a long period of time.
But I do notice it does give you bad breathe and smellier farts.
Try vegan protein shakes they are plant based and are way better.
Take in moderation. I only use post workout one scoop but that's just me. Just drink a lot of water though.
It's totally safe. Optimum Nutrition Serious Mass has a ton of fillers in it, but other than that it's good to go.
Focus on good tho
Are other products of Optimum Nutrition safe?
@YourFutureEx yes, their gold whey wins awards. Their casein is great too. They decided to cut corners on the serious mass product for some reason.
I like Quest Nutrition. They are the best in my opinion, just prepping them fwiw.
Focus on food*
Supplements just supplement your nutrition intake, fills in gaps between meals. I just have a shake before bed. Sometimes I won't have a shake too, it's all about work ethic and food really.
Thanks a lot, fella. :)
I'll need your help in future.
@YourFutureEx absolutely happy to help however I can
while you're taking supplements of any kind you have to drink plenty of water. I can not stress this anymore than that its very important to keep your liver consistently filtering.
i use to take serious mass, its fine even though its full of complete shit
Everything in moderation I think.
exactly
Well you can't really say that when your supposed to take a pre and post workout protein shake, and for most serious gym members they usually work out 5 days a week. Thats a lot of protein shakes. Personally, I call bullshit to these articles talking about liver failure. Your more likely to get liver failure from drinking alcohol which in itself means you have to drink a shit tonne or get alcohol poisoning...
Well now your changing the topic. Obviously you don't need them, but the idea behind protein shakes is that it acts as a supplement for individuals who aren't willing to sacrifice their diet for 10 egg whites a day. Also I'm guessing your female and unless your interested in bulking then protein shakes are not the ideal drink for a chick who wants to lose weight and get that fit beach body. So you can't really use yourself as an example if you aren't interested in becoming a tank.
Just don't over use it and you'll be fine.
One serious problem I kno all to well 👉🏾😖💩💩💯
noooo you're fine!!
