Ladies, are pap smears as awkward as they seem?

I've never gotten one done before so I made an appointment for my first one on Tuesday and I'm actually a little nervous about it. But they won't give me more birth control until I have it done, so.

it helps that my doctor is a lady but still.

everyone gets a little nervous and the gynaecologist and nurse know that so no worries, thats normal. its not awkward for them whatsoever cuz there has never been a weekday where they haven't seen a vagina of a girl ranging from very young to very old. its their job.

r u sexually active or do u use tampons? for me, since i've never had anything up my vag before, it was uncomfortable but way quicker than i realised. just remind urself to relax cuz vaginal muscles tighten when we r anxious. when u relax, u see how straightforward it is. if u have any concerns about ur lady parts, go ahead and ask without shame.

It's not a gynecologist tho it's just my primary care physician lol and nah I don't use tampons but I have used a dildo

My doctor is male and I oddly never felt awkward about it. You just have to remember that they see probably 20 vaginas per day. They think nothing of it. :)

It'll help to let your doctor know (if she doesn't already) that this is your first one. She can make it as comfortable as possible.

Oh she's my primary care physician so she's been seeing me my whole life, she knows lol

I had to get a new doctor my old one, he retired, and my new one had to look at my private parts I hated it but it happens. Check ups of All parts of the body it sucks but sometimes you have to get them checked out

Yeah im a guy but i hate showing down there to a doctor... i have had to to both male and female docs and its so embarrassing

It's not that bad. I had my first one done at my yearly visit to the gynecologist when I turned 21.
She didn't even tell me she was doing it haha. Just went from the exam right to the Pap smear lol. There is a little discomfort, but it's not painful. Like a dull cramp. I spotted for the day after it because it was the first time I had that done. But it wasn't bad or painful.

It's more awkward for you than them lol. The doctor does it all the time so you really shouldn't feel weird about it.
I hate them though. It kind of hurts at first (at least for me it does) but it's nothing too bad.

yes. awkward no matter what. but depending on the doctor it may be more or less emotionally comfortable.
