Leukemia is a general name for blood cancer, but there are many forms of leukemia. One cannot determine its severity without speaking to the doctor to find out what type she has.
In short, her bones are not producing red and white blood cells normally. White blood cells protect against microbes and viruses, so many with leukemia tend to get sick from other infections very easily. The cause of death for many leukemia patients is not from the leukemia, but the infection that comes along with it. So make sure you don't visit her when you're not feeling well, and always clean your hands and mind what you touch around her.
Leukemia isn't the easiest form of cancer to eliminate. Since there's no cure for cancer, the genetic disposition will always be with her. She will require bone marrow transplants which will remove her defective marrow and replace it with normal functioning marrow. But even then, there will always be residual marrow from her own body, so when that grows, she will need more transplants.
Not an easy future for her.

My workmate has leukemia... Unfortunately at this level of technology, that type of cancer is literally "chemo or death", and even with chemo you need to be lucky to survive... My workmate said, one day he just felt extremely weak, as if he would pass out just going out to get groceries. He was surprised, so he went to get himself checked out. Leukemia.
He has been in chemo and treatment and the hospital for about 4 months now. He needs a bone marrow transplant, and his sister is a compatible donor. He won't be back to work for the next 6 months... And we can't see him, haven't seen him for 4. But at least he will survive.
Guy is just 21, too! Why?
It's very risky to ignore leukemia. I don't even know what causes it... It just happens.
Yes, this type of cancer kills.

Unfortunatly leukemia is one of the most dangerous types of cancer. If she does not get chemo therapy her chances of reaching 20 years old are slim to none.
Yes it is extremely dangerous , and it is treatable. I am not in the medical field in any way but I can't say for sure that it is curable. Early treatment does go a long way in aiding in remission
Different types of leukemia have very different outcomes, but generally speaking, without treatment, leukemia is a fatal cancer.
