Does the thought of having major surgery scare you?

According to the May 16, 2016 issue of Time Magazine, medical errors kill 251,454 people every year. This makes it the third leading cause of death in the United States (after heart disease and cancer). So, with that knowledge, does the thought of having a major surgery scare you or are you confident in the ability of your health care professionals?

No it doesn't. My mom has heart disease and to be honest, if I had to chose between her having a major surgery and having heart disease I'd definitely opt for the surgery. I just think I'd or her be better off going through the surgery than without, because if the surgery doesn't happen then what every your dealing with isn't going to magically get better.

That is very true. I feel the same way, but the thought of surgery still scares me.

That's understandable. They don't call it "major surgery" cause you only need a few stitches. But I've found out you can do research on hospital's nowadays and the surgeons. I also found out in school that prior to your procedure you can opt to transfer to another hospital. So at least there are things a person can do to help ease any stress they have about the surgery.

Iam going in on Thursday to have my gall bladder removed. The operation lasts about an hour. I've never been troubled before.
Iam a little concerned now though lol.

Major surgery? Heck, minor surgery scares me already. I think I would completely freak if I had to get major surgery.

Thought of the surgery doesn't scare but wonder how I'd fare in the recovery. That is the painful part. During surgery I'd be in induced fairy land :D

I don't think it is just surgery alone. I am pretty sure it is medical errors in general. It just made me think of surgical mistakes. I am sure it includes other things, such as giving the wrong medication.

Yeah thats what I'm thinking too. Thinking the whole population in affect and how many people have health problems nowadays which seems like everyone. I'm surprised it's not more.

True, but what about those having surgery unrelated to an illness or those mistakes that are made by giving someone the wrong medication?

@SensualScribe It very rarely happens. And more minor surgeries are harder to botch because they are usually not near any vital organs.

It happened to my mother. Passed away due to a surgeon's mistake during back surgery. If it is the third leading cause of death in the US, it cannot be that rare.

If I have confidence in my surgeon, then no. I have to know who he/she is and do plenty of research on them.
