Are you afraid of being put under for surgery or a medical procedure?

I am. I had surgery after my accident and my blood pressure dropped to dangerous levels when they took the breathing tube out. Then I threw up into my lungs and got aspiration pneumonia. I had to be put into a coma for a week.

An outpatient surgery became a 3 week nightmare.

Why were you allowed to eat before a general anesthesia? The doctor and nurse should have double-checked. There is even a famous movie about such a case: The Verdict.

I wasn't allowed to eat... but a stomach has digestion liquid in it all the time.

thanks for this. I am having a total hip replacement in a couple of days. i am freaked out enough as it is without hearing your experience. . I am glad you made it.

Actually I have had the other hip done 4 years ago so I know what to expect. My surgeon uses spinal anesthetic so it is not as extreme and does not require a breathing tube. I totally slept through the last one.

I have been under so many times for surgery that I don't even think about it. The only issue I ever had was the first time being under. I freaked out & almost lost it when I was coming out. Other then that I have never had an issue.

I have only been through two surgeries, and both were emergency situations, so it all happened with little to no warning.

I wasn't, but now I am. I heard reports of people who were inadequately anaesthetized and were aware of the whole procedure but completely paralyzed. Just one more reason to avoid invasive surgery.

It wasn't that bad for my dad, but this happened to him too: "threw up into my lungs and got aspiration pneumonia" So they had to get that fixed before He could come home and recover.
