Girls, Should I take birth control for my period?

im not sexually active and I never have been but I'm 18 and ever since I got my period at 13 my periods have been so bad. They're heavy, they're long. I've thrown up before, gotten naseus, back pain stomach pain, cramps headaches. I get aches all over and this feeling that goes from my abdomen like way down into my legs almost like when you're weak from a fever and the pain is so bad like I literally am on the floor crying in pain and I literally feel like I am dying the pain is that bad. When I tell the doctor about it she just keeps prescribing strong pain killers and they don't even help. I've heard birth control can help with pain and can even stop your period. My mom says birth control might not be the best idea because she took it for menstrual cramps when she was my age and got really sick from it. But I'm sure there are different kinds.. has anyone had any experience with this? Thanks

the only reason I ask is because my period is coming up and everytime it comes around I literally dread it because I know the agony I will be in

I'd say give it a try. I was not as bad as you, mine was heavy enough for me to wear depends to sleep so I don't have to wake up in the middle of the night to change the sheets every night. I would get bad cramps ever other month that prevented me from getting out of bed.

I'm on birth control now and the flow is so light compared to before, cramps are very minor if I get them and its predictable so no more anxiety about when it's arriving.

I did have a hard time adjusting to the pill the first month which resulted in a 1 1/2 month long period, well it was more of a heavy spotting. When I took them way back when I was 17 there was no adjusting problems, I think it's because I'm almost 40 now. Now I have no problems and am very happy.

Yes!!! I do and its easy. Mostly because my periods are rough and I get really sick to the point where I vomit.

Do you get it over the counter? Or should I ask my doctor for it?

Talk to your doctor because some you take once a month or once a year. Find out what works best for you.
