What is with the sick practice of eunuchs that some cultures used to have?

I used to think it was just the testicles, but some places like China would cut off everything. That's just so sadistic... Some would even volunteer for this to try to get a position.

Well, modern societies still have practices like circumcision that may be considered equally stupid.

People chose to be eunuchs because it gave them more political power than they'd normally get. In China back in the 200-300 AD period, eunuchs were allowed to work in the Emperor's palace and be the Emperor's servants. Eunuchs were incapable of sex, since they had everything cut off, so they could tend to the Emperor's harem without the risk of cheating with them. Without the ability to have offspring, this also meant they would never have an heir if they decided to revolt/kill the emperor and seize power.

Many eunuchs came from a poor caste, so they were basically the lowest order of citizen with no nobility. By opting to become a eunuch, the opportunity allowed them wealth and power, at the cost of their nuts and bolts. Basically, if someone offered unlimited power and money for the cost of cutting off your nuts, I'm sure there's many in this world who would accept the offer.

It was used as a way of domination on lower caste people and also to prevent their population from growing
