I think it primarily revolves around the concept of taboo or purity and this childish desire of wanting the opposite or something that is labeled forbidden by your parents. In in this case government, church, religion.

When I was going to become Muslim, I didn't view women that way. It says in Quran you can't view a woman as equal no matter how you feel or how much you want it to be true. I didn't see women as less, so I couldn't fully convert.
