Starting as a security guard?

I was recently hired by a local adult living and care center as a security guard. I would like to know if it would be recommended to wear a groin cup or no to work.

I may have reduced fertility due to a medical test I took and I don't want to compromise my fertility for a job.

Why on earth would you do that? Are you worried that some little old lady is going to smack you in the nuts with her walker?

I can't imagine too many jobs safer than a security guard in one of those places. My nana lives in one and the security people just walk around, check that doors are locked and let people in places if they lost their keys. If a crazed walker-wielding nutcracker goes on the rampage they call the police.

I don't think you should be making fun of OP's worry about fertility concerns. Unless you're a security guard or happen to have testicles, I don't think you can fairly judge whether or not he's being overly cautious.

Don't belittle the guy, just because he's worried about something you aren't.

@BBKAT I'm not belitting anyone. Guys have told me that getting hit in the nuts really hurts. Given that, my concern was more for his comfort and I said nothing about his future fertility.

I've spent time at places like this visiting and I've never seen any staffers attacked by the residents. So yes, I think I can comment on whether this is overcautious or not. I think it's overkill to wear a cup.

We know you know it hurts, everyone does. However, we're really not in a position to say what's reasonable against a pain or risk neither of us can experience.

There are many circumstances we don't think about because it's just not a danger in the same way for us.

What if someone tried to steal a car?
What if someone tried to break in?

There are many people outside of the residence who could pose a threat. It's possible he could get kicked in the balls during any altercation during his duties. That could render him sterile for life, which is clearly a concern for him. If you don't think that matters, then that's another thing completely.

The guy's anonymous, so he's clearly uncomfortable about the question. Just saying you shouldn't make light of it, might make him feel worse.

Helping old people in a retirement home seems like a pretty low risk activity compared to many things people can do.

You are right. There are plenty of situations off-duty that could see him kicked in the nuts, and if he was absolutely worried about fertility then he might wear one constantly.

However, he is at consistent greater risk of testicular damage while on-duty.

@BBKAT I have to disagree with working at a retirement home as an activity that warrants any concern about being hit in the nuts. It's a pretty low stress, low risk job. It might make someone crazy after a while though. I love that someone is looking to work with the retirement home though. We tend to just think that old people need to be locked away - working with them helps you remember that they've all (mostly) made great contributions to society and we owe them a lot.

@BBKAT Yes, i've seen it. It looks devastating. Sure, an old retired person who wanted to make some guy's day miserable could hit them in the balls. I'll bet you that it happens so rarely that no one actually knows anyone who that's happened to. I seriously don't think working security at a retirement home is any more dangerous than stocking shelves at a grocery store.

I didn't say that an old person is incapable of it. I'm saying that it doesn't happen because old people don't go around thinking it's fun to smack the security guards in the nuts. Instead they spend their days wondering what they had for breakfast and where they put their teeth. Your concern for our Anon friend is well-meaning but unnecessary.

I'll say no. In an adult living center, you aren't likely to get hit in the nuts. Plus it will rub ur skin raw by the end of the day.
