I've never had this problem until the last year or so but I'm battling it myself now. Sleeping pills help, but, you also feel a bit groggy the next day (I do anyway - but I was also working nights at the time so I was groggy anyway lol). I don't like to take pills for anything and you can become addicted to them so I don't advice that. If you find something let me know :) I find however you can relax as much as possible, both physically and mentally, works the best. But that's easier said then done. Sometimes I just can't turn my mind off.

I have very poor sleeping habits. My solution has always been to stay up the entire night and following day should I be unable to fall asleep, I'm tired at a normal hour the next day, and my sleep schedule tends to remain fixed for a few weeks after that.
If it's because of anxiety I try to fix address whatever is bothering me or accept that I can't and distract myself with things that make me happy.

If it's barbecue my brain is being a jerk and won't sleep I watch Northernlion videos since his voice is really soothing and the content is interesting enough to occupy my brain but boring enough that I can fall asleep.
Get into a routine. Bath before bed or tea or something. For me I shower, get ready for bed and listen to music or "white noise" and can fall asleep. If I mess up my routine I can't sleep aha !

I usually just put some earphones in and listen to music/talking to get me to sleep.
Don't use light or electronics after sunset, it might take time but then you will start sleeping early

My doctor told me to take Melatonin. It's not so bad when you take the proper dosage.
I would recommend getting cardiovascular exercise regularly in the mornings.
insomina's not that you can't sleep, it's that you can't stay asleep. sounds like you're having dreams and nightmares, or that you're just having a hard time sleeping in your bed for some reason
