Can I still eat these MREs?

The date printed on them says 5 3 11 and I got them in November 12'. Since no disaster has come I figure it won't last forever. should I start eating them and are they still okay to eat?

If the date printed meant that was when they had expired then eat them at your own risk, since it's been more than a year. Verify if the date printed mean the date the MREs would be considered expired and no good. Otherwise, if it is not, it could meant that it was a batch made and sold around May 2011 and MREs have around a 10 year shelf life.

They didn't get back to me yet, but the site says they are good within three years at least. It isn't so specific or anything.

I personally think expiry dates are a consumer conspiracy to get us to throw away perfectly good products and buy more. Something like that I would have no problem eating it 5 -10 years old.

Well, I agree to an extent. If it's like I don't know.. biscuits that expired a few months ago... they're still good, but there's a point with some things when it's no good anymore.

I will give it a try. Hopefully it still tastes good. I've heard these things are actually pretty decent. Been sitting on them for years, and unless a huge catastrophe happens soon might as well use them.

I look at it this way, if the Apocalypse happens, and you survive and are starving several years from now and you find these, would you care about the expiry date?

You'll be fine. I have a lot of those at my house with some that have expired two years ago. They last a lonnnnnng time. You'll live.

Coming from someone that's been in the military I'll say that you'll be fine eating them.
Soldiers in the gulf war had stuff from the late 70's to eat
Guys in Vietnam ate rations from the Korean war
Etc, etc...
