Waking up in the middle of the night feeling upside down?

Now and then I wake up with the feeling that everything is back to front. Say I fell asleep with the bedroom door to my right facing my feet and the window to my left, now and then I wake up feeling like that's been reversed as if I've spun around in bed or the bed itself has been turned.

I fell asleep one time as a child, was sharing the bed with stepmother and brother, I was in the middle (was stepmothers parents house) . Bed was against the wall with the door at the end of it and a large window on the right. I woke up in the middle of the night, its pitch black, and felt like everything was skewed and the bed was turned so the window was behind it and I was freaking out about it for at least a half hour before being taken by sleep again. It was too dark for me to see anything that would suggest that the bed was where it was supposed to be and I couldn't get up to check cause then id wake up my stepmother and brother, but id put my hand through the railing on the bed head to find the wall, trying to right myself, if the wall was there id know I was being silly, but I couldn't find it.

This happened last night, I'm at my boyfriends for the night and we're sharing the mattress in the lounge, I woke up randomly feeling like wed spun. We slept with our heads facing the couch I woke up feeling like suddenly we were facing the telly. There was enough light to prove that incorrect thankfully so I didn't get the chance to freak out.

But does anyone know why this happens? It really freaks me out when it does. It doesn't happen too often and mostly when I'm not really familiar with my surroundings (though I did live here for 3 months I'm pretty sure the lounge is familiar)

Is anyone able to answer this?
