I typically hear its depression or just some form of a mental illness, or childhood issue that was repressed.
I don't know all of the reasons... I do know that one of them is fear of losing things or people, and another is fear of loss of control.
It's a mental illness and thought to be related to OCD, obsessive compulsive dieorder.

I think they are obsessed with owning a lot of stuff that it gets to a point where they can't let go of it when it becomes a huge problem.
