BMI is not scientific it was made up arbitrarily I’m the 19th century by a Belgian astronomer and statistician Adolphe Quetelet. Nor was it ever intended to be used my the medical profession but instead it was intended for statisticians for doing population studies in statistics.
Medical professionals started using it because it provided a number when they wanted to have discussions with their patients about being overweight but there is nothing scientific about it at all.
In fact the medical community has debated for years adapting a new BMI scale because the anarchic BMI scale has consistently been found to have little relevance to individuals health.
In fact the Journal of the American Medical Association in 2005 showed that overweight people had a similar death rate to people that had normal weights for BMI and that obese and underweight both had higher rates of death.
Also other studies have shown that BMI isn’t a good indicator for type 2 diabetes unless patients already had high GGT levels in their blood.
It is a somewhat decent predictor about body fat levels i but only for people with average or less than average muscle mass. It’s has zero reliability to determine fitness or health which is why most professional athletes regardless of gender are considered overweight or obese despite being very fit. Also why people with normal BMI still have strokes and heart attacks despite the lower statistical risk. As any statistician will tell you correlation doesn’t mean causation.
So when science finally makes a rational scientific standard for what’s “overweight” and “obese” I’ll give it credence for medical reasons.
Nobody should be using BMI as a decision factor for relationships. It’s irrational and unfair plus many of the women and men who are seen as seductive and the ideal of sexy are overweight or even obese when you do their BMI.
No, doctors use plenty on non scientific words doesn’t make them scientific. Just like doctors have plenty of unscientific opinions about medicine especially n controversial topics like birth control, abortion, or assisted suicide.
Also why it’s important to not simply go shopping for a doctor that agrees with your point of view but conflicts with medical consensus. For example there was plenty of doctors peddling unproven “cures” for COVID-19 during the pandemic. Still are it’s unethical but not necessarily illegal nor does it make it scientific.
A doctor derives their expert authority from the data not their personal opinions or beliefs. If they espouse things that aren’t scientific it’s not science but opinion.
Yes I follow scientific standards of what is overweight and such. But that has nothing to do with whether I think they are hot. Being skinny doesn't make someone hot and being overweight doesn't make them ugly. But it does mean whether they are healthy or not.
Guys and ladies need to consider the different between a sex partner and a life partner. you want a healthy life partner who is going to be active in your life and good looking long term. YOu dont want to date a chubby girl at 30 years old who ends up looking like a whale at age 50. thats is not cool. so consider wisely and determine if health or exercise is a part of her routine or not. She won't be cute forever otherwise.
Why hasn't this been made best answer? 😁 It's really all about health FIRST, then about whether or not they're attractive to who they want.
(hey, take the comedian #GabrielIglesias's word for it! https://youtu.be/W9zUNBVbIEk?t=220)
As a personal trainer, I don’t rely on BMI very much. It was developed by a mathematician and wasn’t mean to be an indicator of health. What is more important is a person’s muscle mass and body fat %. Beyond that, having a low visceral percentage of fat is important as that is the fat that accumulates around your internal organs.
If a person has a higher percentage of muscle (not necessarily a body builder), they are going to weight more. Does that mean they are unhealthy? No. If you had a thin person who didn’t have very much muscle and a higher fat percentage, they are more likely to be genuinely unhealthy compared to the first person.
Majority of people who have high bmi are unhealthy and that includes bodybuilders because they take gear and have too much muscle mass for their fame
I do look at the BMI scale for the most part, but it does not take into account certain things. Like the fact that muscle weighs more than fat, so a body builder could have a high BMI and still be in shape. For health reasons, I use the BMI system (except for body builder types). I think you can medically be overweight or obese and not be exactly heavy looking. Really all just depends, it can be very grey. Once you get into into Obese zone, there is no doubt at all that that's an obese person.

Err BMI was invented by Lambert Adolphe Jacques Quetele. Why is the inventor important in this case? He was quite clear. BMI was only ever intended to be a guide to the health of entire populations, NEVER individual people.
People that quote BMI in relation to an individual are ignorant. For example rugby players and power lifters are obese under bmi measurement, despite having hardly any body fat and being in good physical condition.
Well, mostly yes, I use it as a measure to see if I need to look after my own weight.
In terms of whether someone is hot yes or no, that's entirely subjective and whether someone is technically obese does not matter at all.
As to whether I'd want to be with anybody, that has less to do with their weight and more with just their lifestyle. Whether large or small, as long as you try to life a healthy life, that's all that matters to me. Even if you "won the genetic lottery"and can wolf down 3 bags of crisps every day and somehow manage to beat the scales, that's very off-putting
Well, not quite.
I don’t think it’s quite as simple as that, as someone can be overweight for their height for example, but not necessarily unhealthy.
They could just have a lot of muscle, not fat.
I think the devil is in the details
I have, sure
If she would look out of place in a tv show or movie from before the 2000s then she's overweight. Doesn't matter how many excuses she has. I actually was more forgiving before feminists went overboard with "fat acceptance" BS where they claim all women are beautiful and a man's preferences never matter. Then I realized, that my preferences and choices do matter and I shouldn't value a woman's opinion on what makes women look good to me at all.
The rule for obesity is ridiculous. For a guy my height and age it states I would need to be used 185 because 185lbs is obese. I would literally never get to eat and I would be skin and bones. I would be DJ Quals.
Science is science. It says fuck all about my attraction to curvy women.
A small percent of women, and a slightly larger but still relatively small percent of men have enough muscle to throw BMI off.
Most people who are obese are, indeed, fat.
For men, waistline is probably a simpler measure. For women a high waistline is an issue, but enormous lower body is not optimal.
if you are a guy and u can't see your abs in good lighting u are overweight over 20% bodyfat percentage is overweight
Just normal downlighting in your living room
Show me a pic I’ll tell you if you’re are fat or not it’s not hard to see if you have abs or not
BMI is the least scientific way to measure a healthy body.
By the BMI scale no professional boxer or wrestler above middleweight is "healthy". They're all obese. It ignores skeletal structure, muscle mass, and a slew of other issues.
It's more important to know body fat percentage. You can be a healthy fat content but your BMI be insanely high. You can have a "healthy" BMI and actually be incredibly unhealthy.
Uhh... no... According to this BMI calculator, I'm considered underweight, lol,

yeah right
Depends on what purpose. I don't have to point to science to express or have the opinion someone is overweight or obese. Especially when it comes to evaluating my attraction for that person.
I defnitively don't care how much is the weight/height ratio of a person.
If I like them, I like them. Plain and simple.
The BMI scale is off, to say the least. Especially for taller people. Even at my skinny rail-thin teenager days, it had me measured as "mildly obese".
Nah, BMI is inaccurate. I’m lean, but I think I weigh a lot. It’s the bone weight too
BMI is the worst index you could use. Unfortunately it's all we got. According to BMI I'm overweight at 165 and I'm 5'9. However obese is easier to measure
No, the standards are not realistic. They also do not take into account percentage of bodyfat which is the better indicator of fitness.
no. i don't give a damn about the "scientific standards". i can see with my eyes, if someone is fat or not.
Certainly not BMI; I know someone who hasn't got an ounce of fat on her, but was officially "borderline obese". Muscles weigh more than fat.
No, BMI is pretty inaccurate, body fat percentage is better. For my height, 6'7, I would need to be 175lbs for a BMI of 20. I would literally die, lol.
BMI is not a scientific standard. It's just a basic rule of thumb people can orient themselves on.
No because the "scientific" standards are a fucking joke, based on bad science and data collected before we landed a man on the moon.
BMI isn't very accurate, but it's not that inaccurate.
That morbidly obese Sports Illustrated chick is not attractive, no.
I follow the standards. I am “Ideal” body weight for my height. 5’8 and 160 pounds. Why would I be attracted to someone overweight?
Of course. Definitions matter.
Nah BMI is useless when it comes to bodybuilding.
No that's gross
Nope.
That woman is veryy hot. Dont care about her bmi
yes of course.
