(Shapes of the bodies below arent't 100% accurate because everyone has a different bone structure. These are just examples.)
Normal Weight:
Overweight:
Obese:
Severe obese:
Morbidly obese:
I wouldn't say they use it wrong I would say the whole scale is inaccurate.
It's an old system that doesn't fit our society any longer. We are naturally bigger than people in the 50s. Taller, more muscle mass. You name it.
But we also have a real obesity problem. The issue comes when they label someone obese by the old standard, when in reality that person is a normal weight for their body.
I'm 6'1 and weighed 170-175 in high school only because I was highly active. When I started college I started working out to put on some muscle. Was around 190-200 pounds by the time I was 19.
By now a days standards I was overweight.
A more accurate assessment for determining healthy weight would be height and body fat percentage. There is an optimal weight for every individual person
I have the same problem. I haven't a pick of fat on me, I work out and have broad shoulders but because im 5,10 at 16 stone im classed as overweight. My ideal weight is twelve stone.
If you haven't seen your feet for a while. You probably are overweight , or have massive jugs so massive they are the reason why earth's rotational axis is kinked.
I like my feet test better.
I am actually guilty of doing that on here but I always think if I call an obese person overweight that's less offensive for them and that it will be enough of an indicator for them to know they should lose weight?
Well yeah I probably worry too much about how people will handle the truth sometimes tho..
Most people think your "normal" is skinny, your overweight is skinny/normal-ish, your obese is a tad overweight, your severely obese is overweight and your morbidly obese is severely overweight.
I don't recall disagreeing with you...
Didn't mean to put them, that's why I didn't use them anywhere else.
But like I said, that's what PEOPLE tend to think.
I agree. This is pretty accurate. =)
Kind of sad you didn't include the skinny and the anorexic too.
Oh, you should've made this into a MyTake - then I think you could. =)
Haha Fair enough. xD
Thank you. =)

Yeah, the terms get tossed around not for accuracy most times, but in a negative way. And I personally don't feel that the overweight picture is a good representation. But then, I don't feel any of them are good except the average and morbidly obese.
It's actually not that bad a representation. I was overweight for my height and my body looked exactly like the picture I've used for it, not gonna lie it still does even though I'm now 5 pounds under what it over weight for my height because most of my weight is fat and not muscle. No one would ever notice with my clothes on though. xD
Yeah, you don't look it at all
Well yeah, I know that lol
Lol keeps you warm
Overweight people are grouped with normal and some normal as anorexic
Probably because its common to see obese people
They maybe grossly overweight or 'fat' but I don't see why I should ridicule them for being Morbidly fat cos its not a contagious disease.
Um it doesn't matter. People generally treat each other accordingly based how they look from 1-10. The prettier, the bigger the piece of cake given. They don't have to voice it. It's already a given.
I noticed that too on this site. o_o
In real life I don't really communicate, so I don't know if I would notice this too. 😂
I think most people spend too much time worrying about how to classify their extra fat instead of trying to get rid of it. Overweight is merely a category, the sub-categories classify the particular level of overweight.
This^^
Yes. I think people throw around words like that without realizing how hurtful they can be
Nothing wrong with it, why hide the facts. If you don't treat your body right and don't understand your genetics you're going to look fat and terribly unhealthy, just the way it is. I don't think we should sugar coat it.
Overweight refers to someone who weighs more than their ideal weight for their height. It's a general broad term. I'm overweight but if I tell someone I need to lose 20 pounds to lose weight then they know the context of what I'm talking about. I don't see the big deal
I use the term overweight according to the BMI. And going by those definitions, I think the person in your overweight example has a BMI <25, so still within the normal (healthy) weight.
Overweight by BMI standards?
I know. That's why I said BMI, and not just lbs. You must have lots of muscle weight to look like that while having a BMI of 25+
As someone said, I refer to overweight and obese people as "overweight" because people use the terms "fat" and "obese" in a negative way. It shouldn't be negative, only an adjective that describes appearance. Society is very fat phobic, so yeah. :P
I think YOU use the terms wrong, and think average sized, 140-150 pound women are "overweight to fat."
The second one is a bit flabby and not overweight about a month of excercise, healthy eating and abstaining from alcohol would have looking like the first pic
Tbh, the second girl would be normal weight in my eyes
But like someone said. Instead of worrying what you are called, work to reduce or eliminate the fat
Yes people get it wrong all the time. I like hukio Inglesiaz (sp) version.
I dont agree with that "overweight" picture.
Because that is not an overweight girl. All she has is perhaps 2% more on the love handles but that does not necessarily mean her weight is over.
In fact even the picture for normal for me is on the under/normal borderline.
A person doesn't have to look obese to be over weight. Even people with a lot of muscle can be over weight because of how heavy that muscle is, but this question isn't talking about that version of overweight. When I was over weight for my height I was shaped like the girl I used for the overweight picture. Hell, it was my doctors who told me so, and advised that I lose a few pounds for health reasons. Being overweight depends on your heights healthy weight range, not the shape of your body. The healthy weight range for my height is 89-132 lbs., but I was over it when I had my last check-up. If I were taller I wouldn't have been overweight, because it varies from person to person.
That is exactly my case. Nobody would look at me and say I need to lose weight. But my BMI and crap always says I am high on weight. I don't believe that. I care more about my cholesterol and glucose levels. In any case, that explanation of you is valid. But one really can't guess those vitals for the couple of girls in the list. Perhaps you are able to relate with them more.
Apparently I’m overweight and nearly obese then
