We don't ask because we know many people feel bad about their weight and so it is best to assume that they might be one and therefore it is uncourteous to ask.

Personally I don't apply that to thin people. If you are scare, simply use a prompt before asking. Let them know you like their body, would like to be more like them and that is your reason for asking.

*BUT YES, asking strangers or non-friends informal questions when you DO NOT have an informal relationship with them is not in harmony with an attractive personality.*
