If someone has to depend a lot on drugs and alcohol are they unhappy?

They have alcoholism and do drugs every day too that too multiple times. Does that mean the person is unhappy?

It is a form of escapism

To a certain degree, we all need escapes in our lives; some find it in relationships, where instead of their work troubles, they embrace their partner. Some find it in alcohol and sex, some find it in sports, some find it in video games etc.

When the escapism behaviour is affecting real life, then it can be concluded that they have something which haunts them, something which they don't wish to confront to

They probably have some issue that they are trying to run away from. It could be a bad marriage, past trauma or just a shitty life circumstance. But some people just like to get drunk or high. Iknew somebody who told me he liked to get drunk because he just liked how it felt.

They’re either unhappy, attention seeking, or just simply dependent on the stuff, expecting it to keep them happy and in a party mood. Either way? Those people need help and i want no part of them

Since I met my boyfriend, I’ve stopped smoking. But once I broke up with him, I go back to smoking for the euphoria effect.

I did. Then he started texting me and called me this morning. Saying “I miss you 🥺😘😘😘” and I asked “why do like me if I’m crazy? 😢🙈” and he said “Because I like you, and you’re the perfect girl for me. 😊”

Then we were FaceTiming and he was asking about if I slept and ate yet and my plans for the day.

No 😭 he just doesn’t give me enough attention. I don’t like how I’ve become around him. All clingy and needy and toxic. Which is why I paid for therapy.

I’m not used to kindness from outsiders. You’ve read my posts. You know my family issues, before I met him.

YES. That’s important too. I’ve been wanting to go back. But the weather is still snowing and dangerous here. I slipped on black ice on my parents driveway and landed on my ass.

I was looking at my school Facebook page just now and they posted a video about job opportunities and mangers hiring.

They are definitely at least twice as unhappy if they are addicted. They add to their psychological problems massive neurotransmitter imbalance with an addiction.

I would think they're unhappy, yes. I haven't met anyone with a substance dependence who was happy.

Well you can’t really assume someone’s happiness. Addiction isn’t fun and majorly sucks, but just because someone’s addicted doesn’t mean they’re unhappy necessarily. All feelings are valid, even if they don’t make sense to everyone.

They are using the medication to mask other sub conscious emotions they don't like the feeling of, or give them comfort.

Could as well be this is their cultures way of being social and it's part of the game.

Most not all are very unhappy and use to cover that up. Some start because of friends. All are extremely unhappy after use turns to abuse!

@FictionalCharacter I don't drink but was married to one she was the nicest person but use she got drunk was a nasty thing I divorced once she sobered up enough to figure out what she lost she drank herself to death and what is sad she was a beautiful smart woman and just wasted her life and ruined people along the way

I think it's an individual issue.
I went through about a year and a half where I smoked pot like every day.
Multiple times a day and usually had a beer or two along with it.
It was maybe the happiest time in my life so far so...
