Going to the gynecologist for the first time in a few days and feeling a bit nervous?

So my mom’s taking me to the gynecologist on Friday and I’m feeling nervous about it, is there anything I can expect or like prepare for? I didn’t really see a reason to go but I guess that’s besides the point

Mine is a bit of a horror story, because I had been raped on my 13th birthday. So I had the full pelvic exam, complete with the speculum! (The tool they use to open up the vagina and look at the cervix, and whatever else they need to check). But I doubt this will apply to you! Especially if you are a virgin.
First, you have to get naked, but they give you a paper gown to cover-up. Then you get on the exam table, and they extend the stirrups. You put your feet in the stirrups, and the exam begins with an external exam of your vulva, then she will get the speculum and begin the pelvic. Nothing TOO traumatic! although if you are a virgin, SPEAK UP BEFORE the exam, there is NO need for a virgin to receive a FULL pelvic exam!
I’m guessing that you are either having menstrual issues, or you mother believes that you are sexually active. There is literally no other reason for a 13yo to see a gynecologist! (Unless there were issues earlier in your life that you don’t remember). Maybe you should be asking your mom WHY you are seeing a gynecologist?

I told my mom that my last couple of periods were really heavy, so she decided to take me in to make sure that everything is ok

I am a virgin too so hopefully they don’t use the pelvic exam because that sounds kind of scary 😟

Thank you, but I’m fine, I really was blessed with the greatest mental health team, and I felt safe and well protected, so today I’m doing very well.
As for what you wrote… I just don’t understand why anyone would take you to a doctors b/c your period got heavier… you’re 13! Of COURSE your period is going to change, that is what PUBERTY is all about! Maybe you are just gonna have a heavy flow… That’s why they make tampons actually called “Heavy Flow”. It’s not like you have years of established light flow periods. Sorry sweetie, I just don’t get it?

I don’t know what advice to give, because I didn’t go to a gynecologist at age 13, and I have no idea why you would need to unless you have issues with your menstrual cycle or you are sexually active.


However, I can only assume that they MIGHT do a pelvic exam? It’s probably unlikely. They check all your parts down there. They might use a tool that is a bit uncomfortable, because they insert it inside you just to check if everything is okay. Talk to your mom about it (I don’t know much else, because I haven’t done it yet.)


They might just talk to you about your menstrual cycle, birth control, safe sex, contraceptives, STDs, and puberty. None of that is something you should be worried about, because they’re trying to educate you on everything!

My first time was rather brief and more of a educational visit. I think @WhatTheHeckkkk would agree with this. While still examination, it isn’t as invasive as when you are older.

@PrettyPriya Yep! When you get older (usually 18 or older, in your 20s), it gets a lot more invasive and they do require some tests that no woman wants to do, but they should do for their safety and health.

Hi and thanks for the information ☺️ I think the reason why my mom is taking me is probably because I told her my periods been a little heavy the last couple of months, so she probably thought I should go to get everything checked out

I was just feeling uncomfortable about the exams and stuff but I think I feel a little better after reading your post ☺️

@connie9888 Oh okay! When I was 13, my periods were a bit irregular and heavy too. I think it’s good that she’s taking you, just to make sure everything’s alright. They might do a quick exam, but it isn’t too harsh, maybe a little uncomfortable.

Yeah I think everything will end up being ok ☺️ I just feel a little bit embarrassed about being in front of the doctor and showing the area down there, but I think I’ll get over it

Good conversation about this and I can say her experience is the same as mine. I went on birth control at a younger age because of period problems.

Make sure to tell the doctor everything and not be shy about it. It is important for your health. Good luck to you and don’t worry at all.

Well at your young age they don't usually do a pelvic exam. It mostly talking to the gynecologist to establish a relationship.

Just make sure you take a shower before hand. Gynecologist are medical professionals, make sure to ask questions, tell her that you are nervous and that you’ll like her to walk you through what she is going to do. Remember that she is a doctor and bound by doctor patient confidentiality, she’s not your parent and only has your physical and mental health in mind so just be honest.
