Is my dad going to die?

My dad who is 54 and otherwise in good health had a PSA blood test done, and levels were very high. He is scheduled to have an ultrasound examination done soon. I'm devastated and very afraid he may have cancer and is going to die. I'm crying all the time, can't sleep or eat. Anyone here know anything about this, like had it in their family? Please, what is going to happen if it turns out to be cancer? I tried to do some googling but it just got me more worried.

There's a belief, weirdly common, that prostate cancer prospects vary based on age- that if it strikes when you're older, you're probably okay (it does kill people, but it kills them slowly; often once you're past a certain age, they won't bother to do much by way treatment, since you probably won't live long enough for it to shorten your lifespan), while if it's bad enough to be detected when you're young, you're done for. This is not the case. The patterns aren't consistent. Hopefully your dad will be okay, but there's really no way to know until they do their tests and see. If it IS cancer, the doctors will talk to him about treatments; there are many different options, and the sooner it's caught, the better and more options he'll have.

As scary as it is, try to be patient. And just in case, be sure to tell him you love him every chance you get. If there's something specific you want to make sure you do with him, do it- even if the cancer's not a problem, either one of you could be hit by a bus tomorrow. Better to have the good memories even if nothing goes wrong, though.

I'd also suggest getting yourself a microphone (your phone might work; experiment) and using Audacity or another similar program to make a recording of the two of you. I made one like that when it became clear my mother was dying, and knowing that I have it is a real comfort. I don't listen to it often, because it makes me cry, but my niblings are getting toward the age when I should start talking to them about who their grandmother was.

Okay, enough depressing stuff. You're in a rough spot, but hang tight, and know that somewhere out there, a sympathetic internet weirdo is rooting for the two of you.

Don't panic. A high PSA level can be simply an infection. I'm dealing with the same thing myself right now. If it does turn out to be cancer, it still isn't a reason to freak out. Prostate cancer is a slow moving cancer and there are ways to deal with it. Your dad will be fine.

I’m sorry for what your dad and you/your family are going through. My dad died of prostate cancer so I know the feeling. High PSA level is not always cancer though and if it turns out it is the survival rate is something like 98% percent if it hasn’t spread yet. If it turns out it is cancer they will check the stage of thr csncer, so if it has spread to other parts of the body or not, for example the bones. Treatment and prognosis will depend on what stage cancer it is. The doctors will determine the best treatment plan for his specific case. Could be surgery, radiation therapy, hormones, chemo etc.

It is scary, I know. It’s obviously difficult to not worry and panic, but like I said before, it’s not necessarily cancer at all. High PSA levels could also be caused by other things like for example prostate infection. If it is cancer the survival rate is again 98% if caught at an early stage before spreading. The vast majority of cases are caught before spreading and there are usually symptoms if it has spread (like bad back pain, which my dad had). So just wait for the ultrasound results and take it from there.

His psa level was above 10, which means a higher than 50 % risk of having cancer, from what I read online

I have not had anyone deal with this, however, my dad is 69 and obviously a bit older than your dad. My dad has been taking prostate health medications for the past 20ish years, because prostate issues usually arise around the age 50… And yes, I worry about my dad dying or having cancer too, but his family history doesn’t have it, and his tests are good.


You should understand that having high levels in the PSA blood test does not always mean prostate cancer. Yes, it is a sign, but it could also be other issues such as an inflamed or enlarged prostate. If it is a concern with the doctors and/or your dad, they might require and suggest more testing to be done.


And, of course, if he is at risk or does have cancer (after being further tested), there are treatments that can help. It doesn’t mean your dad will die.

My dad had been diagnosed with prostate cancer and was treated and has been alive now 10 years after his diagnosis. Don't get ahead of it until you know for sure, even if it is cancer, catching it early makes chances very good he can be treated and go on.

I am exactly the same age as your dad. My levels were extremely high also. Found out that I just had an infection. I was put on antibiotics for 10 days. I had another psa test done 3 weeks after I finished the antibiotics. My levels were all back to normal.
Don't get yourself all stressed out about it. Whatever the reason is, your dad is still young enough to treat it.

Well take it one step at a time. Don't get ahead of yourself or get too upset because you need to be strong for your dad (think how he feels if you are this worried). He'll need your support. But try to stay positive also. Like don't worry about cancer until or unless you find out for sure that he has it. Cross that bridge when you get to it. Don't assume the worse case yet. And hopefully all will turn out well!

Since you mentioned he has been 'vaccinated' then that may be related since it's not a 'vaccine' but a poison. The health system is corrupt and not concerned with promoting health, but death. Nothing further from me will make you feel anything other than anxiety.

If your father is vaccinated by the Covid vaccine, and goes to a hospital that is pro-vaccine.

Then he will die much faster.

If he does have cancer and it was caught early then chances are he will survive unless it's something like Pancreatic Cancer.
