Honestly I would totally love it if they did more about the mentally ill... but lets be real people any system we put in to place would be corrupted. Most the money would go toward people trying to tell the rest of us sane people that we should be more accepting. Then shame us for not giving a shit about people that failed in life and now need us to validate them for being just as good as us, when we all know they are not.

Every thing I was taught as kid about what's right and wrong, good and bad today has been turned on its head by these bleeding hearts. Honestly I was told not to do things, don't make those choices in life... it you do that you will end up like loser bum on the street and you don't want to be a loser bum. So I work hard and made smart choices, and not it wrong to call loser bums, loser bums and we are supposed to do more for them because we can, but we will always expect and accept less from them.

They would corrupt the program by forcing their tender heart, rainbow and unicorns bull shit on us hard working types that can cut it in the real world while these people collect welfare, unemployment and workers comp and now use this metal health bullshit to qualify for even more assistance when we all know damn well they have no intention of making a honest contribution to society.

I live in a residential neighborhood, so such a facility wouldn't be allowed to be built next to my house. I'm in single and double family homes only.

But low-density group homes. where a few people live would be fine. However, I think there is a need for larger scale institutions that will hopefully graduate people to group homes and then back out into the general public. But SOME people will need a lifetime of institutionalization. Mentally sick people should NOT be in prison, where the majority of them are today. It's shameful.

Equally shameful is the homeless problem which is also populated by the addicted and mentally ill. These people are so out of touch with reality they might get help temporarily through medication and therapy, but once they feel better, they stop getting help and descend back into fear and madness.

About 5.5% of US spending on healthcare goes on mental health. The UK spends 14.8% of its healthcare budget on mental health, and there's also the NHS, providing universal healthcare, free at the point of delivery.
The average tax rate in the US is 22.4%. The average tax rate in the UK is 23.3%.

So how about, instead of asking if people would be willing to pay double the amount of tax, you ask if they'd be willing to pay 4% more tax, if the US spent more on mental health, and you got universal healthcare thrown in too?

I pay PLENTY already. I need as much as I can keep for me and MY family.
They get enough money. Be a good steward of our money and don't wasted so much and cut programs if they show that they aren't working.

I know how budgets work though... once a department or program is created... it will live forever. They need check to see if it is necessary or is getting the intended results and they aren't scaled back or disbanded. You have to spend everything in your budget so that at the end of the year they can just raise the budget for the next year.

There are people out there who seem to think people work and toil 40, 50, 60 hours a week... just to fund the politicians in office and that we aren't working for our own lives and families... who NEVER think enough taxes are taken and who are ALWAYS looking for new ways to take more tax money away from people.

What I would pay double my taxes on is the legalization of sterilization. I have nothing against the mentally ill as people but they are mentally ill because there is something wrong with their genetics.

In the 1900s and earlier many of them wouldn't have survived to adulthood because back then there wasn't the health care or sympathy for them and as... to be extremely blunt... they contributed little nobody cared. Much like how many of the slugs on welfare - drug addicts, drunkards, etc and nothing else wrong with them - would've likewise died off back then.

Because western society has become so weak kneed and coddles to such people their numbers are ever increasing. When naturally - again as in the 1900s - that wouldn't be the case. Because nature doesn't like anything - be it human or ant - that contributes little to survive and reproduce.

The reality is the reason Europe doesn't have many of Americas social problems from mass homelessness to mass shootings is we intervene in mental health issues early on. It's better to pick someone up, dust them off and send them on their way than leave him on the ground to be trampled on until he can't stand up, but hey to you guys that's communism.

I'm not in favor of it.
People in general do not take mental health seriously and therefore would not seek any psychotherapy. Or they don't even understand mental illnesses. Which is why professional psychologists are being selected carefully, not the type, that says "eat salads and lift weights and smile at the mirror".
The other problem is that freeloaders would take advantage of these services while taxpayers finance those services and most likely do not use these services themselves because refer to what I have said above. I know way more people, who don't go to the doctors than those, who do.

Granted paying for (mental) healthcare seems sort of like a barrier to basic human rights as-is. But my point is if you need psychotherapy, go and get it. Most people don't go consulting with psychologists. Or worse they argue against the medical professionals.

The shooter recently was not cared for properly before he went on his rampage at the school. Most shooters are suicidal. I would rather spend my money on solving the real problem instead of enforcing some unnecessary gun control. Ya I will sacrifice for that.

The mental health treatment budget is a small fraction of what is spent to prop up and enrich military contractors and weapons makers (Boeing, Lockheed-Martin, General Dynamics, Raytheon, etc). Use some of that money.
