Should you help someone who chooses their own misery?

This is a moral question:

Do you think we should help those who made horrible choices for themselves even when they knew consequences?

My father was living an unhealthy life. He got diabetes and it was deadly for him to eat sugar, but he ate it every day: soda and cinnamon, every day. He even only ate sugar. He got stroke, actually 3 times. I feel like he deserves it. But my family's finances, everything goes for his treatment, it has been 2 months and still no significant progress. They are not giving up on him.. paying enormous amount of money... and meanwhile me, who needs finances for studies, because I studied for years for the university to have good grades and have a high chance of a good education, now will probably won't be able to do it. I feel resentful, but I wonder if I'm fair or morally right. What do you think? Sometimes i feel like I deserve finances for studies more, because I worked for it very hard, than my father who carelessly harmed his health without thinking about consequences.
