Lactose intolerance?

Although it is common now, it wasn't always the case that people could consume milk for their entire lives. Like most mammals we survived on our mother's milk for the beginning of our lives. Yet, as we got older, we developed an intolerance to milk. How was this beneficial? It seems the ability to consume and digest milk for our entire lives would be good as opposed to bad. Furthermore, judging by how common it is now, most people can digest milk their entire lives.
